The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is celebrating its 57th anniversary, and this time the event in the Czech Republic is set to celebrate the Iranian filmmakers who have shaken up the cultural landscape over the past four years. 2023 will also honor directors whose work has been forgotten for a long time, as well as local talent and emerging European directors. At this year’s event, the acclaimed Crystal Globe will be presented to a New Zealand actor and Gladiator star Russell Crowe.
As you may know, Iranian filmmakers face a constant threat of censorship. The country needs permission from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance not only to distribute the title, but also to shoot, which means that the government can dictate where and what will be filmed. However, this does not stop aspiring filmmakers from making their voices heard and finding loopholes to realize their skills. KVIFF will honor their votes by presenting a list of nine Iranian films: Without end, locust, Zapata, Leather, Gate of dreams, trip to the moon, black and white river, Create between two surfacesAnd K9.
KVIFF honors Japan and Russell Crowe
KVIFF also goes back five or six decades to honor a Japanese director whose work has been forgotten for many, many years. Yasuzo Masumura He had a unique vision for post-war Japanese society, but it is only now that his talent is being recognized for what it is: confrontational work that challenges the preconceptions of its time and is also eminently eclectic. KVIFF will show eleven films from Masumura’s filmography, including blue sky maiden And Spider Tattoos. Meanwhile, Crystal Globe Award winner Russell Crowe will be honored with a screening to mark the 10th anniversary of the Oscar winner. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
The “Future Footage” section of the festival opens up opportunities for new talent as ten students and graduates of the film industry get the opportunity to showcase their short and medium films to the audience. New filmmakers are also provided with one-to-one mentoring, through which they learn about training, promoting and expanding their theater chain to break into the film industry. These filmmakers will also meet with representatives from talent agencies UTA and Range Media Partners for referrals, and one of them will be selected to spend a month in Los Angeles on a scholarship.
Last but not least, KVIFF will bring Czech culture into the spotlight as a longtime actor. Daniela Kolarzhova receives an award in honor of his many years of film career.
