Editor’s Note: The following are full spoilers from Season 2 of Shadow and Bone.Netflix Shadow and bone different from other fantasy worlds for many reasons. The Grisha’s abilities aren’t exactly magical, and the culture is inspired by Russia rather than the typical fantasy setting of medieval England. But perhaps the biggest thing that makes the world unique is the giant line of shadow that crosses the land of Ravka. This geographical feature, known as Nemoré, Shadow Canyon, and more commonly the Canyon, plays an integral role in the series. It shapes both Ravka and the characters who live there. With the division he represents and the many people who have lost loved ones to Shadow Canyon, it’s no wonder everyone is outraged by this. Slicing through the middle of the country and separating East and West Ravka, the Canyon is made of pure shadow, and the moving, tangible darkness is home to deadly volcra that cannot leave the shadows, but eat anyone they can find in their domain. . The Canyon is an important part of the world’s history, posing a unique challenge to the Ravkan people due to the Darkling (Ben Barnes).
This disrupts trade as much of Ravka is cut off from the True Sea and families are being torn apart. It is impossible to get around the Canyon, since it borders on Ravka, and the country is not friendly with neighboring peoples. But crossing the Canyon is difficult, usually done on a boat driven by Grisha Squallers, although some have found alternative routes. The light in the Canyon will only attract the volcra, so the crossing must be made in almost total darkness. Many people lose their lives in the process of going back and forth. But in the second season, the fold becomes more deadly. And starting from season 2, the Canyon is expanding, engulfing nearby cities and causing widespread destruction. As the threat grows and Ravka finds herself at war with the Darkling, Alina Starkov comes under increasing pressure (Jessie May Lee) to use her sun-summoning powers to destroy the Fold, but she doesn’t know how to do it.
Who created the fold and why?
Everyone knows that the Canyon was created by the Black Heretic, a summoner of shadows who became an enemy of the king. But few realize that the Black Heretic and the current General Kirigan are one and the same. Once, when he was much younger, the Darkling created the Fold, believing it would protect him and his comrade Grisha. The Grisha were hunted, and their small community had nowhere to run. The king’s people were especially after the Darkling, so he made a rash choice. Using the abomination, the Darkling attempted to turn the soldiers into his army, but the spell went wrong, creating a Shadow Canyon and turning the soldiers into volcra. Abomination is known for being risky, unpredictable and always comes with a price. So it’s not clear if the Darkling intended to create it at all. But after that, the Darkling was unable to undo what he had done, and the shadow engulfed the once lush land. Since then, the Fold has been haunting Ravka for hundreds of years, and although they have learned to live with it, it still causes problems for Ravka. So they wait for the Sun Summoner to destroy the Canyon, and many seem to believe that Alina will do it.
The crease grows in the second season
In Season 2, the Fold poses more of a threat than before as it grows larger. It has been stable for hundreds of years, but in their final confrontation in the first season, the Darkling uses the Frost Deer power-up to harness Alina’s powers and expand the Canyon. Shadows engulf the city of Novokribirsk, which was located just beyond the Canyon. Most of the inhabitants of Novokribirsk were killed by Kanyon and his volcra, although some managed to escape. This attack was a display of the Darkling’s power, a direct and deliberate expansion. However, the mere fact that it can grow is terrifying enough for anyone in the vicinity, but it doesn’t stop there. After this initial surge, the Fold continues to expand. Alina first sees this in a dream, but believing the Darkling is dead, does not realize that the dreams are real.
However, during her journey, Alina meets refugees from Ravka, who inform her of the growth of the Fold. The spreading shadow displaces the people living on its shores, forcing them to flee or die. The Darkling survived the Volcra in the Fold. He escaped and is now an enemy of Ravka. Still bonded to Alina, he has the same power he needs to move the Canyon to Novokribirsk, and he uses it. Sometimes it moves it quickly, swallowing whole areas, and sometimes it only grows a little, but the Ravkans are scared. Since the Canyon is a bigger threat than ever before, Alina needs to act quickly to destroy it, but she doesn’t have the power yet.
How was the fold destroyed and who did it?
In Season 2, Alina and her allies set out to destroy the Fold, now with more pressing need than before. But at the end of the first season, Alina did not have enough strength. She decides to find more Morozova’s amplifiers to increase her powers. She receives the fetters of the sea whip and learns that Mal Oretsev (Archie Renault) is a firebird, although she refuses to kill him. When time seems to be up, Alina and her friends enter the Fold to fight the Darkling again. During the confrontation, Mal is killed, and Alina combines the power of all three amplifiers. Finally, she can destroy the Canyon with a flash of light from her hand. However, the Fold will not be quickly forgotten. Although Shadow Canyon is no more, Ravka has a strip of desert. The canyon was destroyed, but did not heal, as it left scars on the ground and the lives of those who lost loved ones. With the generations split, Ravka is united, but the characters are left to discover what the country is like without the Fold.
