It has become apparent that constant reality shows have now become a common fact of life, like death, taxes, and the annual Marvel movies. Some of these shows are loved, some are despised, some are believable, and some are credible to the point where using the word “reality” to describe them feels like a misnomer. For several decades in the “genre” of reality shows, some of the most enduringly popular shows have been those that focus on competition between contestants.
As a general rule, reality shows are at their best when they’re down to earth and simple, or when they’re so over the top that they become a strange sight. The reality shows below tend to fall into the latter camp, and all have certain rules or creative choices that make them stand out and seem pretty wild. These shows are ranked in order of their oddity or exuberance, starting with the wildest and ending with the wildest.
10 “Squid Game: Challenge” (2023)
The very existence of a reality show based on squid game just turn it on when it comes to discussing quirky game shows. After all, the popular 2021 show it’s based on is a hell of a scenario where desperate contestants are forced into a death game, and it’s not something that should necessarily be replicated in the real world.
And, of course, it’s safe to assume that the 2023 series is based on squid game won’t be as deadly as what was shown in the fictional series, but the production has already been criticized and the idea itself has generated controversy. Also, there were reports of injuries during its production, so as wild as the show is, it doesn’t quite feel like wild in a good way.
9 “Survivor” (2000–2023)
More than 20 years after the debut and more than 40 seasons behind the original version survivor may seem strange by today’s standards. However, for a show that came out in 2000, it was a new and radical concept, and one that would certainly seem extreme and out of the ordinary for people tuning in in the early 2000s.
It immediately garnered attention due to the extreme physical, mental and emotional toll the members had to endure. The premise involves people forced to live under harsh conditions in various exotic locations where food is limited, intense physical competition regularly occurs, and there is a lot of intrigue and betrayal thanks to one person being eliminated by a vote in virtually every episode. It was eclipsed by other shows when it comes to extreme content, but for its time it was wild and pushing the boundaries.
8 ‘Mole’ (2022)
2022 version Mole is available to watch on Netflix and essentially reboots and reinforces the already tense reality show premise. People work together to add money to the bank through various challenges, though it ends up being a competition as only one member goes home with said money.
Complicating things is the fact that one person on the team is the mole, and this leads to a lot of stress, and everyone needs to be careful about which one of them can be this mole. This adds an extra layer of tension and mental anguish to an already physically demanding competition, making it a striking balance of intense and extreme.
7 “Sasuke” (1997-2018)
Japanese game shows have a reputation for being some of the most unusual and wild. sasuke especially noteworthy in this regard, as it is one of the most famous in the country. Each season, 100 contestants begin a challenging set of challenges in an obstacle course that aims to test them mentally and physically.
This is notable for how quickly people can be eliminated, given that it all starts with a startlingly large number of competitors. It has had over 30 seasons in Japan since the late 1990s and has served as inspiration for similar obstacle course reality shows, and has also been edited and dubbed for other countries, usually under the title “Ninja Warrior.”
6 ‘Freaks’ (2000-2007)
In a manner, Freaks it’s like a game show, only more chaotic than most, given that there aren’t really any set rules and there’s no objective winner. Instead, it focuses on a group of friends who are constantly trying to outdo each other with extreme and often painful looking stunts while pranking each other in equally dangerous ways.
The feeling of competition seems more casual, but ultimately you get the feeling watching it that everyone is trying to go one step further than the others when it comes to the tricks they do. Together, they took it one step further when they continued the TV show as a series of films, the most recent being 2022. Freaks forever - was especially funny and caused shudder.
5 “Takeshi’s Castle” (1986–1989)
Takeshi Castle was an essential program when it came to making Japanese game shows especially wild and over the top. His tone is incredibly goofy, emphasizing humor more than genuine anxiety or tension over various challenges in which the participants are forced to do increasingly extreme and unusual things.
In a way, the show has gotten even weirder since it first aired as a host. Takeshi Kitano, is now well known for making action and crime films, which are often intense and intense. Of course, outside of Japan, he is more closely associated with the yakuza crime film subgenre, but unexpectedly began his career in Japan as a comedian, actor, and game show host in the 1980s.
4 “Naked and scared” (2013-2023)
Naked and scared comes from the same school of titles as cocaine bear got out of. Above all, these headlines aim to be simple, attention-grabbing, and weird, and to contain everything viewers need in as few words as possible.
Indeed, in Naked and scared, the members are thrown into a horrific survival situation and they start the show literally with nothing…not even clothes…hence the naked part. They usually spend about three weeks in the wilderness, and the show mostly features one woman and one man in each situation. Thanks to the name and quirky premise, it has been popular for 10 years, based on survivor but emphasizing extreme survival conditions and giving members less clothing.
3 “Most Extreme Elimination Challenge” (2003–2007)
It’s hard not to mention the show called Most Extreme Elimination Challenge when it comes to extreme reality shows. It’s really all about the title and it lives up to its very confident title by being one of the wildest of all Japanese competition shows.
Much of this is edited from the above Takeshi Castle, albeit updated in a way that makes it more extreme, fun, and potentially digestible for foreign viewers, as well as new sound effects, commentary, and gags. Purists may of course want to stick with the original, but for those who want to see this show even edgier and updated for the 21st century, Most Extreme Elimination Challenge has your back.
2 “Kenny vs. Spenny” (2002-2010)
Kenny vs Spenny can be compared with Freaks in a way, although it gets more extreme than the original Freaks show ever received. It only follows two people rather than an entire team of friends, and is much more mean-spirited, as well as emphasizing rules and competition more than the comparatively laid-back one. Freaks.
Kenny Hotz And Spencer Rice spend each episode battling bizarre competitions, and they only get more extreme (and often rougher) as the show goes on. The loser is often humiliated at the end of the episode, and given that Kenny is the more violent (and mean) of the two, he usually wins. It’s probably not for everyone due to how rough and brutal it can be, but it easily ranks as one of the wildest reality shows in recent memory.
1 “Documentary” (2016-2021)
beauty Documentary is that it’s incredibly bizarre, yet ridiculously simple at the same time. Participants are forced to spend six hours together in the same room. They are allowed to take a limited amount of props with them, and all of them must make other people laugh.
Anyone who laughs more than three times within six hours is eliminated and the winner is the last person left standing/not laughing. It always turns into absolute chaos after the first hour or two, and some of the things people end up doing to make others laugh must be seen to be believed. It’s a high point for reality TV in general, being surprisingly straightforward and super bizarre at the same time, striking the perfect balance between these two seeming extremes.
