Religious indie hit Lionsgate just unstoppable Jesus Revolution. Continuing to exceed expectations, the film grossed a total of $45.5 million at the box office after its third week at the box office in the country. Director John Ervin And Brent McCorkle, Jesus Revolution officially won the Lionsgate award for the highest-grossing post-pandemic film since 2019.
The movie giant went to great lengths to generate buzz around the film long before it hit the screens, with early church and university screenings that no doubt sparked interest from the wider public. This was reflected well after the release of the film. The picture has consistently attracted the attention of moviegoers since it was released in theaters three weeks ago. In fact, it was only supposed to make $7 million at the box office on its first debut. However, it far exceeded that figure, more than doubling expectations and earning a triumphant $15.5 million in its opening weekend. It continued to attract audiences in its second week, earning an estimated $8.65 million that weekend alone. Given that the film had a modest budget of $15 million, it’s clear that it was in very lucrative territory.
What is the Jesus Revolution about?
Set in the 1970s, the indie drama tells the true story of a spiritual awakening among a close-knit community of Southern California hippie teenagers in a movement that was eventually dubbed the “Jesus Revolution”. The film explores in detail the history of Youth Minister Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney) and his meeting with the charismatic preacher Lonnie Frisby (Jonathan Rumi) and Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer) as they opened the doors of Calvary Chapel and greeted a swarm of hippies intrigued by a seemingly new take on Christianity.
In the real world, this movement has spread from California to America and far beyond. It is also often credited with merging Christian music with a more modern sound that will inevitably be more easily liked by the younger generation.
In general, the film received mixed reviews from critics, but the audience understood it much more clearly. As can be seen from the indicators of domestic distribution, the film has earned unshakable audience sympathy. Its current Rotten Tomatoes audience rating is 99% based on over 5,000 reviews. Subsequently, it also received a proud A+ CinemaScore.
