Rocky Balboa was undoubtedly a story of love and triumph at its core, and it seems that Creed III follows in the footsteps of his predecessor. Just a few hours before Michael B. Jordanmovie-dominated theaters, audiences have been given a new insight into the dynamic between Adonis “Donnie” Creed (Jordan) and his now wife Bianca (Tessa Thompson).

In a new shot from the upcoming boxing hit, Donnie, wearing a suit and boots, sits on the edge of a luxurious bathtub, with his wife across from him. In an intimate and seemingly emotional moment, the couple lean towards each other with their eyes closed and their hands intertwined, sharing a moment of peace in each other’s presence. The intense hugs indicate that Donnie is overwhelmed with stress as Bianca tries to make him a truly supportive partner. To ease the burden on Donnie’s shoulders, the caption reads: “Don’t let him destroy everything we’ve built.” The impact of Bianchi’s words is especially fitting, given the enormity of the task Donnie has in front of him.

From all the promotional materials, it becomes clear that Donnie’s problem is deeper than it seems at first glance. The film tells about a former boxing champion who is now retired and has become a real family man. However, his happy life gets thrown out of balance when his childhood best friend Damian “The Lady” Andersen (Jonathan Majors) is released from prison and is determined to haunt Donnie with an unspoken past. Not only does he threaten to strip him of the legacy he built on the back of his mentor Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) and his late father Apollo (Carl Weathers), but he also makes clear his intention to ensure that Donny’s entire family pays for his losses.

Despite having a boxing career full of glittering titles under his belt, Donnie’s unease clearly lurks beneath the surface. Whether it’s because there’s more to the story of Dame’s arrest than meets the eye, or simply because there’s a painful reality to having to stand up to someone he once considered his family remains to be seen. Consequently, the warning Bianca offers to Donnie feels much deeper than just defending his boxing title.

Thematic subtext Creed III cry Rocky-inspiration in films that have become known for touching on actual wrestling outside the ring. It appears that Jordan’s proposal successfully builds on that very essence with a film hailed as “Certified Fresh” on rotten tomatoes and get rave reviews from Collider Ross Bonimewho praised it for breathing “new life into this nearly half-century-old franchise.”
