In an exclusive interview with Collider Stephen Weintraub to the 15th anniversary of Cloverfield, Batman director Matt Reeves announced that he will soon meet with the new co-CEOs of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, as Reeves tells us, fans need not fear as his BatVerse will continue to be developed in parallel with the new DC Universe.

Last year, Reeves brought to theaters a revolutionary version of Gotham City with Batmana beautifully crafted detective story that focuses on the emotional growth of Bruce WayneRobert Pattison). The film was a box office hit, especially as theaters were still suffering from the effects of the pandemic. So, of course, Warner Bros. asked Reeves to begin work on a sequel and spin-off miniseries.

A few months after Batman, a merger of Warner Bros. Discovery shook the DC Universe to its core as the company set out to revamp its superhero cinematic universe. Among the content cuts, Reeves signed a multi-year contract with Warner Bros. Discovery, who supposedly kept his BatVerse safe. However, once Gunn and Safran were hired to make tough decisions in the name of a single story, we all feared that Reeves’ vision for the Dark Knight would not fit into DC Studios’ 10-year plan for movies, TV shows, and even movies. video games.

We were relieved when Reeves confirmed this week that he is still working on Batman continuation. The director also intends to expand his BatVerse with Penguinseries featuring Colin Farrell it goes into production this year. However, that doesn’t mean Reeves has free rein over his BatVerse - he still needs to sit down with Gunn and Safran to lay out his long-term plan. As Reeves tells us:

“They are [Gunn and Safran] were great. […] In fact, we should meet in the next few weeks because they want to discuss the overall plan with me, and then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We’re just getting together to talk about all this. Look, I’m glad to hear what they’re going to do. BatVerse, as James said and as Peter said, is the kind of thing they let us do.”

Will DC Studios take the Elseworld approach to BatVerse?

As co-directors of DC Studios, Gunn and Safran’s first task was to bring all the productions together into a coherent storyline. That’s why they’ve already made controversial decisions like scrapping Wonder Woman 3 and dismissal Henry CavillSuperman. So it’s interesting to know that Reeves will be able to continue creating his BatVerse, cut off from the larger DC Universe.

It looks like Gunn and Safran could adopt DC Comics’ Elseworlds strategy, allowing writers to create stories that take place in different timelines as long as they don’t conflict with the main canon narrative. As Reeves tells us, the main goal of the upcoming meeting is to look into his BatVerse, Gunn, and Safran 10-year plan and determine if there are any competing stories. According to the director:

“I had this dream of how I wanted it to play out, and that’s part of what I’m going to talk to them about in a few weeks. They will talk to me about what they are doing in their ten year plan or, of course, in the near future, so that we can understand that we are not - this is air traffic control - we do not want to crash into each other. We want to support each other. I’m very excited. I am very happy to hear about what they do and work with them. It’ll be cool”.
