Hannibal, which aired from 2013 to 2015 was critically acclaimed while on air. It was praised for its complex storyline, stunning visuals, and overall elegance. So when the series was canceled after Season 3, the news certainly came as a shock. Since then, die-hard fans of the series have been demanding a fourth season or even a revival series, refusing to give up hope on the story of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter.
Conversation with collider Christina Radish behind Law and order, Hugh Dancy, who played Will Graham on the show, addressed calls for a fourth season and possible reasons why it hasn’t happened yet. First, Dancy explained why he thinks fans are still looking forward to seeing Season 4, saying:[W]We keep talking when we’re asked, “Oh, we’d love to do this,” and that’s true. Maybe one of us will say, “I will absolutely never do a fourth season of the show.” Hannibal“but that would be a lie.” When asked if he was surprised that there hadn’t been a fourth season yet, Dancy replied:
“I’m not exactly surprised, because in fact, in the first place, someone has to write a fairly large check. I’m not talking about getting paid. I’m talking about the cost of creating a television season. For a while, it seemed that streamers would be the salvation for everyone in this regard, but now the cutoff has come. There are series that are watched by millions of people, but do not live up to the second season. So I have no idea what that calculation is.”
The push-pull relationship between Dancy’s Will Graham and Mads MikkelsenHannibal Lecter is made for brilliant and dynamic TV. The series follows Will Graham, an intelligent FBI profiler with the ability to empathize with serial killers. He crosses paths with Mikkelsen’s Hannibal Lecter, a cannibal and forensic psychiatrist who is intrigued and fascinated by Will Graham. In a twisted quest for connection, Hannibal Lecter tries to manipulate Will into killing him. Both Dancy and Mikkelsen put on amazing performances that have made the show one of the best explorations of the life and mind of one of the most popular fictional serial killers. Their performances were also backed up by an equally impressive cast and brilliant direction from the creator behind the camera. Bryan Fuller and directors like David Slade. Therefore, it is no wonder why fans and actors want to return to this world.
When asked if there will ever be a point where he’s no longer interested in playing the character or hoping for a season 4, Dancy explained, “We can literally just get old and people on the internet will start saying, ‘ Well, actually, it can be a little rough.” Before adding that Season 3 ended “pretty convincingly” and Fuller’s idea for Season 4 always included an open gap…so never say never.
Dancy was also kind enough to reassure curious fans that Will’s dogs were indeed all right.
Oh, I feel like someone is looking after these dogs. I don’t worry about dogs. I feel that Will has prepared for the mechanism by which his dogs and his rods will go to a loving owner.
While, to be honest, fans may never see a fourth season, there’s perhaps a bit of consolation in the fact that Will’s dogs are being taken care of. Be sure to check out Radish’s full interview with Dancy, and in the meantime, check out Collider’s 90-minute interview with Fuller and Dancy below:
