AT M3GANroboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) becomes the unwitting guardian of his 8-year-old niece Cady (Violet McGraw) when her sister and brother-in-law die in a car accident. Unable to deal with a grieving child, Gemma turns her attention to what she’s good at: robots. She is finishing up her generative Android Model 3, M3GAN, an AI doll that bonds with a child to learn and teach and become their best friend. However, Cady becomes too dependent on M3GAN and M3GAN senses this.

M3GAN comes to us from a crazy mind James Wanand director’s eye Gerard Johnston. We spoke to Gerard who told us about working with M3GAN, how to make this film self-aware without being overly campy, and how he learned to be a horror director with his first film. chained to the house.

COLLIDER: So, Gerard, tell me about working with M3GAN. Did you work with [an] animatronic doll, a real creation.

GERARD JOHNSTON: Yes, yes. Well, since this is only my second film, I have to say that it was indeed a bit of a naive venture. It was such a fun concept that I didn’t even think about how difficult it would be to bring this thing to life, for which we don’t have the technology yet, but we may be in five or ten years time. So yes, it was hard, but it was also rewarding and fun, and I think the doll design was really a saving grace. She just looked so mesmerizing and I think that did the most work for us.

This is a crazy movie. Was it the purpose of making him like this… The only word I can use is insanity.

JOHNSTON: Yes. Well, the world already has From the carit’s a very stylish reflection on artificial intelligence and I love this movie, but there are movies like this and I think it’s really… It’s a lot more unusual and I didn’t want to do anything like Chucky. , or Children’s gamesbecause that’s been done too. It’s like we had a real funny, campy goofy version and it’s somewhere in between these things that it’s really fun and it’s self-aware and it’s quirky and it’s the flavors that I like. majority.

Yes, because it’s both scary and funny.

JOHNSTON: Yes, that’s right. Cool cool. I will thank you. That it’s a challenge to try to be both, but it’s so rewarding when you’re sitting in a room full of people and they’re laughing and screaming and reacting loudly. It’s just the best feeling. So, although I never thought about a career, I have done two horror films and I love all genres, but I would say that the most interesting thing about horror comedies is that you just get the best. both worlds, getting laughter and screams.

So do you see yourself as a horror director now?

JOHNSTON: No, but I’m not a snob. It’s fun. Working in this genre is fun. But no, I never set a goal… My first film, chained to the house, was a fun idea that made it possible to be a horror movie, but it meant that I really had to go through training to learn how to make these films, because I found out that they are really hard to make. You have to have a real understanding of your craft, and because there’s so much of it, the camera helps to tell the story, build tension and the like. So it’s a real art form and I want more people to understand it, [and] what it takes to make a really good horror movie.

So what are you working on next?

JOHNSTON: Well, there’s talk of a sequel, but we’ll have to wait and see. So what will happen, and yes, who knows? [There are] several things on fire, but you must have several irons on fire, because you never decide what to pick up. So yes. So, a lot of different things.
