Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for The Witcher: Blood Origin. While waiting for the next part Witcher, fans can enjoy the expanded universe that Netflix is creating in the meantime. In addition to the original show, the streamer released an animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf in 2021 and limited edition, The Witcher: Origin of Blood, at the end of 2022. And with the wide world created in Andrzej Sapkowskinovels, there’s more than enough material for additional spin-offs - although the adaptation doesn’t fully match Sapkowski’s story, opting instead to make the universe unique to the show.
The latest addition Origin of blood is a prequel show that explores a time long before Witcher, but the two are far from unrelated. Buttercup (Joey Baty) appearance, Ciri (Freya Allan) and the first The Witcher give the two series an obvious connection. However, he offers new information that does not fully match what we know about the world from Sapkowski’s books. There are two main differences in the origins of the Witchers and the Wild Hunt. But despite the changes Origin of blood explains a part of the story that will inevitably become important in Witcher row. With a better understanding of events (especially what has changed in the series), fans will be able to better enjoy the upcoming seasons of the original series.
Origin of Witchers
As the name suggests, Origin of blood it is the origin story of both the witchers and their universe. While the series sticks to Sapkowski’s concept of the Conjunction of the Spheres, they took the first Witcher in a different direction. Origin of blood is the story of a motley group of elves and one dwarf trying to stop the overly ambitious Empress Mervyn (Mirren Mack) from conquering the multiverse. But Mervyn’s beast from another dimension causes problems. Unable to defeat him with conventional methods, the Outcasts fuse one of them with the heart of another interdimensional beast, making the warrior stronger and less vulnerable. So, exiled elf, Fjall (Lawrence O’Fuarine), becomes the first Witcher. However, the transformation is not complete and Fjall becomes corrupted, forcing his beloved Eile (Sofia Brown) to kill him as soon as the task is completed. Although the word itself was not used at that time, Shonchai (Minnie Driver), telling Dandelion’s story, calls Fjall the real Witcher. Fjall’s story doesn’t contradict Sapkowski’s version of the early Witchers, but they don’t fit together.
In the books, early Witchers were needed to protect people after the Conjunction of the Realms. In the new world, people did not have the ability to protect themselves from the monsters that threatened them, so a small number of people became witchers. The mutated people were hated by those they protected, but they considered them the lesser evil. The tragedy of these witchers was that they could not live among humans, but were vital to the survival of the race. Origin of blood takes place before there are humans in the world, and it is not clear in the series how more Witchers will appear. Although Fjall is the first Witcher, the second one is still a mystery, so the description of the early Witchers can still be accurate.
Buttercup’s opening scene explains that there are many different versions of this story, but it’s completely true despite not being true to other legends. Dandelion is waiting for Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) marvel at the history of one’s people, bearing in mind the events Origin of blood are not well known, even among witchers. While this point does somewhat justify the differences, some connections are missing. Perhaps most disturbing is that Fjall is an elf and the Witchers are a human organization. The mutation is so specific that the order refuses to take Ciri for fear of what she will do to the human girl. The elf would have been even more different, so the transformation would most likely have gone wrong. Of course, things can change over the years between the two series, but this is more than a gradual development as it changes the basis of The Witchers.
wild Hunt
The other big difference is the Wild Hunt. Origin of blood presents Eredin (Jacob Collins-Levy), supreme commander of the Golden Empire, who rebelled against the sorcerer Balor (Lenny Henry) - who is best versed in monoliths. In their confrontation, Balor sends Eredin to another realm and closes the portal, abandoning him and his soldiers. Eventually, Eredin finds a bone helmet, becoming an enemy that WitcherTeasing the finale of the second season.
Eredin has centuries to earn his infamy as the leader of the Wild Hunt before he meets the characters in Witcher. However, as one of the main connections between the two series and the storyline that most demands understanding of the Conjunction of the Spheres, the Wild Hunt looks different than it does in Sapkowski’s books. In this version, the Wild Hunt from another universe uses monoliths to travel between worlds. The fusion of the Spheres destroys them, and from then on they appear as ghosts in the other worlds they travel to. Origin of blood changes home. But given that Eredin was exiled for several hundred years and that time went missing, this change is minimal. These soldiers have more than enough time to settle into a new home on the other world, although then their long life will require an explanation. But if there is no point in changing, then why do it? How exactly does Eredin and his backstory play into Witcher won’t be revealed until the new season comes out, but there must be a reason.
Origin of blood Further explanation of the world of The Witcher
With the powers of Ciri, understanding the Conjunction of the Spheres will be essential to moving forward. Ciri’s bloodline is now also gaining in importance. Origin of blood allows a wider audience to understand the backstory of the world as well as some of the characters such as Eredin. A prequel helps fans of the books or games know what matches up with the series version and what doesn’t.
Origin of bloodexplanations will make the future Witcher the content is easier to understand for all fans as it expands the knowledge of the series. All in all, the prequel series successfully expands the universe and explains what was a decidedly confusing period in world history, but it remains to be seen how this might change the original series in the future.
