With experience in making both true crime films and documentaries, and being a native of Boston, he was already interested and well aware of the story’s backstory:
“Growing up in Boston, I always heard about the Strangler in a very abstract sense, but I didn’t know anything about the details of this case, and a few years ago I started reading about him and discovered a really fascinating, multi-layered story of a serial killer,” he says. “I have always loved journalistic stories, and while researching the case, I discovered these two journalists, starting with Loretta McLaughlin, the first journalist to link the murders, and in her reporting, she actually gave the Boston Strangler his name. It was truly monumental. history for her in her career in the early 1960s. She was a very ambitious reporter in a male-dominated field and that was a real turning point for her.”
The cast is complemented by quality supporting actors. Alessandro Nivola, David Dastmalchian, Morgan Spector, Bill Camp and Chris Cooper all took part in the project, which was filmed on location in Boston. Raskin spoke about the practical difficulties of filming on location, but was pleased with the end result.
“Of course there are old neighborhoods with old buildings, but it’s very difficult to make a period film these days, especially in Boston where so much has changed,” he said. “There is always some element that is not appropriate for the time. We shot in the winter and some of these cars just won’t start in mid-January! But we had a wonderful group of people and I’m proud that we shot the film in Boston, very close to many real places, it was an incredible opportunity to recreate that period.”
