Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for The Witcher: Blood Origin.
season 2 Witcher focuses on Ciri (Freya Allan) heritage, showing that everyone is after the girl because of her Elder Blood. With The Witcher: Origin of Blood takes place 1200 years before the events of the main series, fans should not expect Geralt to return from Rivia (Henry Cavill) protégé. However, the prequel series does lay the groundwork for explaining what Ciri’s Elder Blood really is and how it could impact future seasons of the main series. The reason is that Origin of blood investigates the Sphere Link, the event that introduced humans to the Continent and ultimately led to the creation of Elder Blood as a powerful weapon for the elves.
What is elder blood?
Various political forces on the continent and beyond covet Ciri because her Elder blood gives her innate access to powerful magical energies. Ciri received her Elder blood through her genetic heritage, as she is a long-lost descendant of Lara Dorren (Niamh McCormack), a powerful elven sorceress. Lara was supposed to marry another wizard elf so that they could have children so powerful that no other race could resist the elves. Instead, she married a human mage named Cregennan of Lod, who advocated the peaceful coexistence of humans and elves.
The marriage of Lara and Cregennan shook the continent and caused great divisions between both races. This is because Lara was intended as a weapon for the elves, someone who could help them defeat the humans and regain control of the continent. The Netflix series still hasn’t explored the origins of Elder Blood, but Andrzej Sapkowskithe original books mix medieval fantasy with sci-fi concepts to create a unique universe. That’s why Witcher deals with things like time travel and genetic manipulation.
In Lara’s case, she was the product of careful research and planning as the elves develop a plan to create the ultimate sorcerer. Although Lara thwarted the plans of the elves when she married Cregennan, her Elder blood lives on in her descendants. And by that time Witcher happens, Ciri is the last survivor carrying Lara’s gene, which makes her even more valuable. The events leading up to the creation of Elder Blood do not start after the Sphere Conjunction. So, investigating this catastrophic event, The Witcher: Origin of Blood helps us understand the political disputes on the continent.
The events of Blood Origin lead to the creation of Elder Blood
Origin of blood does a decent job of emphasizing that elves are first and foremost conquerors of the world Witcher. The prequel lets us know that the continent belonged to the Dwarves long before the elves arrived, and that the elves built their culture on the ruins of their enemies. No wonder Princess MervynMirren Mack) helps with the upheaval to create the Golden Empire and that Balor (Lenny Henry) begins to explore the Monoliths to find ways to conquer new dimensions and draw power from different worlds. Elves are cultural expansionists and this is also reflected in the interdimensional horsemen known as the Wild Hunt.
During the Sphere Conjunction, several dimensions cross the same point in space and time for a few moments. As a result, creatures from different dimensions find themselves on the Continent. Many of these visitors are monsters that plague the land and lead to the founding of the Witcher Order. Most importantly, the Conjunction of the Spheres also gave birth to humans, another race driven by war and bloodshed. In the decades and centuries that followed, humans became the dominant race on the continent, oppressing elves and dwarves everywhere. This is what eventually causes the elves to begin their genetic experiments to amplify the magical talents of new generations, creating the Lara Gene.
The elder blood that flows in Ciri’s veins is the result of the conflict between elves and humans that began after the Conjunction of the Spheres. It also gives her immense power that everyone wants to use for their own purposes. season 3 Witcher Ciri’s abilities should be further explored, and thus the series could explain how Netflix adapts Gene Lara’s story. And with The Witcher: Origin of Bloodfans will better understand what happened on the continent that pushed the elves to create Elder Blood.
