In each edition of the CCXP, Brazilian artists are recognized for their contributions to the art industry and for spreading the country’s talents beyond its borders. This year the famous director Fernando Meirelles was a laureate whose work was honored. When he stepped onto the Thunder Stage for an interview, the director talked about some of the projects we can look forward to. The biggest and most exciting is, of course, the sequel to the Oscar-nominated film. God’s city.
Released in 2002, the famous drama laid bare the cruel world in which the poor and blacks are forced to live. The film was praised for its commentary on the fact that children born in communities (slums) receive little to no attention from the government and must endure extreme violence in all forms to survive. However, it’s been 20 years since the film’s release, and Brazil has changed a lot since then. God’s city the series will be designed to reflect this.
What problems marked God’s city have not ended. Racism is still a very real and structural problem in Brazil and people born in communities are still victims of constant prejudice. The difference now is that more people are acknowledging the problem and focusing on destigmatizing these communities. As Meirelles himself says, God’s city “Told about the shortcomings communities. Fernando Meirelles wants to dive into the world of superheroes
Meirelles also spoke about another project he has been trying to launch for years. Name Cidadao Incomum (Extraordinary Citizen), the series will be based on a novel about Brazilian superheroes. The story centers around a struggling actor who wakes up one day and discovers he has superpowers. He then decides to play the role of his life: to become a superhero. The novel spawned a six-issue comic book story, and Meirelles wants to focus on that follow-up series. However, the director revealed that he had a hard time convincing streaming platforms to fund the project.
Apart from God’s cityMeirelles is known around the world for taking on projects that expose serious global issues from around the world. AT Permanent gardener, for example, the director told a story about the outrageous use of people from African countries in clinical trials by drug companies without specifying the terms of their informed consent. Meirelles recently directed the acclaimed Netflix film. Two Popeswhich was nominated for three Oscars.
