As fans prepare to return to Pandora for the long-awaited Avatar: Path of Water, ABC offers a unique opportunity to revisit the original film. While fans have been able to stream it for years now through Disney+, DVD, cable, and other means, the original Avatar will first appear on television through a network owned by Disney. It will air on ABC on Sunday, December 11 at 7:00 pm ET/PT, just five days before. James CameronThe sequel will debut in theaters. It will also air on Freeform on December 15 and 18 and on FX on December 26.

Avatar was a groundbreaking film when it was released, shattering box office expectations, grossing over $2.9 billion worldwide, staying way ahead of other juggernauts like Avengers: Endgame and another colossal Cameron hit Titanic even adjusted for inflation. In addition, he is largely responsible for popularizing 3D cinema, with its incredible CGI and state-of-the-art filmmaking for the time, which required a budget of $237 million, excluding advertising costs or other factors. Television broadcast is not the same as the big screen for which the film was practically made, but it is a unique opportunity to see Avatar if you don’t already have one or don’t have a Disney+ subscription.

This initial trek to Pandora was based on humanity’s desire to colonize Pandora’s moon and mine the precious resources there. However, due to the poisonous atmosphere, humans had to explore the planet with their avatars, a body they could remotely control that resembled the native Na’vi population. Former Marine Jake SullySam Worthington) joins a group of operatives on the planet and eventually meets and falls in love with a Na’vi woman, Neytiri (Zoe Saldanha), eventually drawn into the struggle to protect their homeworld from human encroachment. Thanks to the box office success and all the love the film received, Cameron was finally able to turn it into a five-movie franchise about Jake, Neytiri and their growing family.

Avatar: Path of Water Hopes to continue the legacy of the original

Avatar: Path of Water will revisit and develop the themes of love, family, environmentalism and more, coming from one of the greatest sequel creators in film history. Cameron is known for taking his favorite films to the next level with aliens as well as Terminator 2: Judgment Day among his finest work, and he hopes to do the same with Avatar. The sequel, set years after the original, follows Jake, Naytiri and their family as they struggle against the people who force them to uproot their lives. Early reaction from journalists was mostly in seventh heaven, with some claiming that Cameron once again created a sequel better than the original. It definitely spent money rivaling the original as water path apparently has to be one of the highest grossing films to even make a profit.

Leading roles Worthington and Saldanha return among the film’s star ensemble. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Dilip Rao, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Rabisi, Kate Winslet, VIN dieselas well as Una Chaplin.
