Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for the first season of Andor.In a galaxy far, far away that continues to expand in an arbitrary chronological order, it can be difficult to keep up with the setting of new content. Especially when the world has its own way of measuring time, which is not easy to transfer to the real world. But Disney will always release the necessary information. Andor centers on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a character familiar to fans after appearing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Stories. Just a recognizable character can help fit the series into the overall chronology, but in this case, it’s not just about him.
In the opening scene of this new addition to the Star Wars universe, a title card appears, informing viewers that it is now 5 BBY. Of course, understanding what this means is quite another matter, but it’s easy to see how it all boils down to star Wars timelines once you learn the system.
What is DBY?
To understand the date, it is important to know the meaning of the abbreviation BBY. It means “before the Battle of Yavin”. Dates in the Star Wars universe are reckoned in relation to this event. Thus, each date will be followed by either BBY or ABY (after the Battle of Yavin). This is the center of the timeline for two reasons. First, it was a defining moment for the world of Star Wars.. And secondly, all the fans know about it, whether they realize it or not.
The Battle of Yavin takes place during the original Star Wars movie. Star Wars: A New Hope. It is sometimes referred to by the more descriptive name Death Star Battle. The battle ends in victory for the Rebels when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) destroys the Death Star. The name Yavin comes from the location of the battle that took place in the system of the same name. The Rebel base from which the heroes took off was on a moon called Yavin 4, so there are many reasons why Yavin was chosen that way.
Andor takes place five years prior to these events, giving a common time frame between the original trilogy and the prequels. Frankly, even this is a significant help. But there’s a lot of Star Wars content going on around this time these days, so when Andor in relation to this?
When does Andor take place compared to Rogue One?
Obviously, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Stories has a lot to do with the new show since they have a main character. Developments Rogue One take place in 0 BBY, so Andor begins five years before Cassian’s first acquaintance with the universe. Cassian has a lot to do before he becomes a passionate rebel from Rogue One and this series is meant to show that journey. With Season 2 already confirmed, as well as that post-credits scene that points to the construction of the Death Star, it’s unclear how much time is left until next season. Andor will cover, but this will occur within a five-year period before Outcast one.
Notably, 5 BBY is the last time Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) sees So Guerrera (Forest Whitaker) before fateful events Outcast one. Their relationship is established Rogue One in motion, uniting Jean and Cassian. Saw Guerrera appears in several episodes Andor as an ally Stellan SkarsgardLuten Rael (though their philosophies differ regarding the growing rebellion) but don’t expect Jin to show up with him as they had a falling out by this time - which is also documented in the canon novel. When do other important Star Wars events take place?
If you are looking at Andorrelation to other recent shows, it is important to understand that Obi-Wan Kenobi, The last Star Wars series to air on Disney+ was released four years before Andorin 9 BBY, and follows Ewan McGregorcharacter through the galaxy in a rescue mission. While it’s unlikely that the two series will ever merge, as Kenobi is supposed to remain isolated, it does show just how strong the Empire is in the years to come. Andor.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is another Star Wars story floating around in this time slot. The year is somewhat ambiguous, but judging by Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) age, Solo must be around 10 BBY, a little further from Andor how Obi-Wan Kenobi but still pretty close. Again, neither the events nor the characters are likely to overlap, but this provides context for the wider world of events. Andor and the environment in which Cassian grew up.
Andor works simultaneously with the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Somewhere in the far reaches of the galaxy, a young thief, Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray), joins the ghost’s team at the same time that Cassian joins the rebellion. This connection also helps to understand where the rebellion is during Andor. As seen in Star Wars Rebels, rebellion is in its infancy. 14 years after the rise of the Empire, the rebels are still learning to work together and become an organized movement, but they are making progress. Although they are small, the time is not far off when they will pose a real threat to the Empire. Andor gave more story to the beginning of the uprising and will continue to do so in the second season, which means more familiar faces. Like Saw Guerrera, galactic senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) appears in the series.
When does Cassian Andor’s memories take place?
First three series Andor include memories of Cassian’s childhood. The date is not explicitly stated, but given what is known about Cassian, it’s not hard to guess the time frame. Cassian must be 26 years old. Rogue One, making it 21 in Andor. Judging by the appearance of the young Cassian or Kassa (Antonio Vigna), he is around 11, meaning the flashback takes place 10 years before the main series. This places the flashback at around 15 BBY, although Cassian’s age may have been changed for the series, as the details given in Rogue One they don’t seem to match completely.
Since only one season has been released to date, it is possible that Andor creator Tony Gilroy may reveal more about Cassian’s backstory in the series. Until then, fans will just have to wait for another season to come out. 1 season Andor is currently available to stream on Disney+, with the second season set to premiere on a date yet to be announced.
