In this time when so much is being revisited or remade and nostalgia is at its peak, it seems like almost everything is on the table to be reimagined. The most recent and striking example, of course, Tim BurtonX Wednesday series. As the title suggests, the series primarily focuses on Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) and explores her character outside of her family. But it wouldn’t be a reinvention of the Addams Family without the rest of the creepy and weird clan.
On the Wednesdaythey do, and while these cases could be better described as glorified cameos, we are treated to Morticia’s unexpected but highly anticipated backstory (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzman) Addams. While the storyline is minor and ultimately seems insignificant towards the end of the season, it’s more than enough to ask the question: When will we see a Morticia and Gomez spin-off?
Morticia and Gomez Addams - the epitome of romance
It’s impossible to watch an Addams Family movie and not faint even a little about Morticia and Gomez’s relationship. They fit perfectly together, if you will, cut from the same black fabric. Seeing a glimpse of their early years together on WednesdayOne can’t help but yearn for a proper origin story for the morbidly in love couple.
In every film adaptation of the iconic family, the couple is always portrayed as madly in love, exchanging sweet words and gentle touches - and who could forget their ability to waltz? It’s amazing that we haven’t yet seen a movie or TV show centered on these two. Based on chemistry alone, Morticia and Gomez have always been a big part of what has made the Addams Family legacy so successful all these years. There’s something so endearing about their oddly beautiful romance, about the sadistic pleasures they share and the pleasure they take from all things creepy.
However, we never got a backstory or much information about their early time together. How did two people who were perfect for each other ever find each other? How did they first meet? Was it just fate or some sort of cosmic deal? What was their wedding like? These are burning questions, folks! Their love knows no bounds, and it deserves a detailed account of its beginning.
Gomez and Morticia finally find out the backstory of their love
According to Wednesdayhistory, Morticia (Gwen Jones) and Gomez (Lucius Hoyos) both attended Nevermore Academy in their youth, where they quickly fell in love. Most surprisingly, however, their relationship here turned into a love triangle - with a boy named Gareth, who mistook Morticia’s kindness to him for romantic affection. Of course, we know that this is not the case; Gomez and Morticia are too perfect for each other to ever doubt it, but this becomes a terrible moment.
Gareth soon starts stalking Morticia, instead trying (but unsuccessfully) to get her to fall in love with him. Things come to a head one night when Gareth crashes the school dance and starts to fight Gomez (almost to the death) on the rooftop of Nevermore. Throughout the episode, we are led to believe that Gomez killed Gareth - he was even arrested for it. But we soon learn that Morticia actually killed him, and Gomez took it upon himself to take the rap for her. Thus was born their eternal loyalty and love for each other. While the backstory is minor and seems rather outdated in the overall story of the season, it’s pretty sweet to see young Gomez and Morticia in their formative years. Even in their younger years, their devotion and admiration for each other were the most important aspects of their relationship.
Why young Morticia and Gomez will be working in TV right now
As mentioned earlier, Morticia and Gomez are a huge part of The Addams Family’s success, no matter what the adaptation. They are the pinnacle of love, the main and recognizable couple in pop culture, and just a funny couple. Their morbidity is part of their charm, and the way it’s bluntly played only adds to their oddly endearing charm - and it’s pretty funny, too. Giving them a spin-off would definitely work. There are so many things to use when it comes to their characters. Their dark, brooding aesthetic would also fit in well with the modern style that cinema, television, and audiences in general aspire to.
Adapting a Morticia and Gomez spin-off could be a good move for a number of reasons. On the one hand, it is the ideal companion for Wednesday, and given that the series went viral on Netflix in its first week of release, it’s likely that this will translate well. Also, based on what we’ve seen about their backstory in Wednesdaychances are we would have learned a lot more about Nevermore’s history if both of them had attended school. There seems to be a very rich history behind the school that should definitely be explored, and what better way than to follow Morticia and Gomez through their early days?
But reason number one? More Morticia and Gomez Addams! Whether it’s in the form of their adolescence or the focus on them these days - there’s always room for our favorite creepy, crazy, “till death do them part” lovebirds (and then some) Couple Addams.
First season Wednesday now available to stream on Netflix.
