The golden age of hip-hop surged into Hollywood as the 1990s saw a flood of gangsta-rap-related films, a wave that spilled over into the new millennium. Stomach which was released in 1998, remains one of the most iconic films of that era. As it was customary in films of this category, Stomach capitalized on the popularity of rap stars at the height of their careers at the time, which starred the deceased Earl Simmons he is DMX, as well as Nasir Jones better known as Us as two of his major stars in their debut film roles. Although he was initially condemned for his violent portrayal of young African Americans, Stomach grew among its audience and became a cult classic, and has since been praised for its use of brilliant cinematic elements, especially in the opening scene. Now Lionsgate is celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary by giving fans the chance to experience stunning 4K UHD from January 24th.
For the first time, the film will be available in Ultra High Definition. Fans will be able to shop through Best Buy, making the release available exclusively in two ways: first as a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital SteelBook, as well as a standalone 4K Ultra HD edition with respective price tags of $27.99 and $22. $99. The slightly more expensive version of the SteelBook will include special features, including audio commentary with the film’s writer and director. Hype Williams, as well as the Spoken Word feature and some Blu-Ray-only deleted scenes. Also on Blu-Ray will be a video clip for the soundtrack to the film “Grand Finale”, recorded by DMX, Nas, Method Manas well as Ja Rule. These brand new offerings will be available for purchase starting January 24, just in time for the film’s 25th anniversary.
Stomach was Williams’ feature directorial debut, and remains his only successful foray into the world of filmmaking, as several other attempts proved futile. However, Williams continues to direct music videos and is best known for his longtime collaboration with Kanye West directing over 20 music videos for the rapper, including hits “All of the Lights” and “Heartless”. The director was recently honored at the 30th annual Energa Camerimage Film Festival for his achievements in music videos.
Besides DMX, Nas and Clifford “Method Man” Smith (Godfather of Harlem), Stomach featured numerous other actors in supporting roles, including Taral Hicks (King of Newark), Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins female hip hop group, TLC, Tyreen Turner, Hassan Johnsonas well as Oliver “Power” Grant. The film also featured cameo appearances by a hip-hop group, Decisive conflictand rapper, Phantom Face of Killa. dancehall stars Sean Paulas well as Mr. Vegas also appear as themselves.
