Never saw Martin Scorsese1973 gangster classic Goncharov? Well, if not, don’t be discouraged because the movie was never made. A few years ago, a Tumblr user posted an image of his recently purchased fake boots with the caption: “I bought these fake boots online and instead of the brand name on the tag, they have the name of a non-existent Martin Scorsese. movie??? what the fuck.” The boot tag reads: “Martin Scorsese Presents Goncharov‘, which most likely refers to Gomorrah, a 2008 Italian film for which Scorsese did some publicity. Soon other Tumblr users responded that Goncharov a real movie turning a fake movie into a cult meme. It’s now clear that Scorsese knows about the meme and seems to find it quite amusing.
Actress Francesca Scorsesedaughter of a prolific filmmaker, recently published tik tak referring to Goncharov meme and whether her famous dad knew about its existence or not. TikTok shows another TikTok user asking if Francesca should tell her father about the meme. Francesca stitches another TikTok and answers the question by showing screenshots between her and her father. In the screenshot, Francesca Scorsese sends her father an article about Goncharov shows a fake poster and asks, “Did you see that?” Martin Scorsese replies: “Yes. I made this movie years ago,” implying that the director is aware of the meme and finds it quite funny.
The point of the meme is to make people believe that The Potters is a real movie and those behind it created a fake plot and cast to make it even more believable. A non-existent film is said to be starring Robert DeNiro as the main character, a Russian hitman living in Naples. The plot of the film will follow Goncharov as he falls into a love triangle with his wife and a man named Andri and comes face to face with a deranged killer named Ice Pick Joe. Cybill Shepherd will portray De Niro’s wife while Harvey Keitel played by Andri. The film will also feature Al Pacino, John Cazale as well as Gene Hackman. Since no one has heard of it, internet memsters have stated that Goncharov was a troubled production and is a lost film.
Judging by his correspondence with his daughter, it seems clear that Martin Scorsese is involved in this. Goncharov joke and wants to further convince people of the existence of a feature film. However, since the director seems to like the idea of the film, perhaps the 80-year-old Scorsese will actually do Goncharov during his lifetime.
