Nicholas StollerX Bros will be a film for the history books. This is the first gay romcom from a major film studio. It is also the first major studio film featuring exclusively LGBTQIA+, led by Billy Eichner as well as Luke Macfarlane.

While all of this is true, this is not the first gay romcom. There aren’t as many of them as straight rom-coms, but as gay rom-coms become mainstream, it’s time to go back and see how we got here.

When he meets the man of his dreams, SteveMichael T. Weiss) his priorities changed dramatically after he learned that Steve was HIV-positive.

While the AIDS epidemic, which disproportionately affected the gay community, had a lasting impact on the entire world, and stigmatized gay people for generations, was a major topic of mainstream discussion in the 1990s, there was still no significant investment in history, told from a gay perspective. When it was, they tended to be tragedies that used AIDS as a means of punishing gay people for being gay. Jeffrey challenges this view. He looks at being gay and having AIDS not as a death sentence, but as a reality. Steve’s life is far from over. The film is a joyful celebration of life itself.

‘Trick’ (1999)

Although he likes Cal, Moe is the type of person who wants to pretend like everything is fine. But when Cal starts to challenge his point of view, Moe wonders if he made a mistake about love.

Gay Muslims are even less represented in the American media than gay men. Breaking fast is proof that even the story of a very specific experience can have a universal resonance. The film is funny, sweet and poignant and worth a watch or two.

‘Saving Face’ (2004)

Screenwriter / director Alice WuX saving face One of the most underrated films of the 2000s. The film follows the mother-daughter duo Hwei-Lan Gao (Joan Chen) and Will Pang (Michel Krusek) as they deal with a secret love that causes problems in their traditional community. Wil is afraid to publicly announce her lesbian life, and her mom got pregnant out of wedlock.

saving face this is a film that challenges the notions of shame that are associated with sexuality in general, but especially in the LGBTQIA+ community. When her parents come to the conclusion that she must be a lesbian, they send her to a gay conversion camp. While there, she meets a cavalcade of crazy homosexuals and begins to fall in love with fellow camper Graham (Clea Duvall).

The film is fully consistent with the style, from the bright colorful aesthetic to the insane cast, which includes such Mink Stole, Michelle Williams, Melanie Lynskey and badge RuPaul. But I’m a cheerleader is a romantic comedy destined to become a cult classic for generations of LGBTQIA+ people.

Heartbreak Club: Romantic Comedy (2000)

Most romantic comedies are about two people. The Broken Hearts Club about the whole baseball team. Screenwriter and director Greg Berlantithe film follows Dennis (Timothy Olyphant) as he comes to terms with the impact his wacky bunch of friends have had on his life as he gears up for his 28th birthday. What makes it interesting is that each member of the group of friends presents their own way of being gay. Gays are often described as a monolith with a very specific way of being, but this film shows that there is diversity.

The cast of this movie is really good, especially for a 2000 gay romcom. Oliphant was joined by such people as Dean Cain, Zach Braff, Justin Theroux, Billy Porter and the gay icon herself, Jennifer Coolidge. With many moments that will make you laugh and with many faces before they became famous, The Broken Hearts Club worth your time.

“One All the Way” (2021)

Netflix was really trying to take over the market with a holiday romantic comedy, and Single all the way might be the best yet. This is a great example of how in the 2020s not every gay romcom has to be about coming out, but can embrace the idea that being gay, while still stigmatized for many, is becoming more and more acceptable. Sometimes it’s nice to sit back and live for a couple of hours in a world where there are no judgments that there are in the real world.
