The show premiered in January 2018 in the UK and Ireland and in December 2018 on Netflix. The first season was praised by critics and fans, with a 100% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season received a 97% Certified Fresh rating. . Set in the 1990s, the series follows the exploits of five teenagers: Erin Quinn (Jackson), cousin Erin Orla (Harland), friends Claire (Coughlan) and Michelle (O’Donnell), and Michelle’s cousin James (Llewelyn). Teens balance teen struggles by exploring bizarre and absurd situations and attending school during the end of the Troubles, a time of conflict and sectarian violence between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. In addition to archive footage of politicians, the Derry Girls reference events during the Troubles such as the IRA ceasefire announcement, President Bill Clinton’s visit to Northern Ireland in 1995, and the Good Friday referendum (which marked the end of the Troubles).

In the third season, Erin, Orla, Claire, Michelle and James are reunited again for one last round of humorous antics and adventures. McGee commented on Twitter on the end of the show: “Who knows if Erin, Claire, Orla, Michelle and James will ever return in some other guise, but for now that’s for us.”
