One of the main topics that J. R. R. Tolkien focused on Lord of the Rings is the corrupting nature of power. Those who are tempted by power beyond their control end up abusing it. The idea that weapons can be used as a defense is a lie; humanity cannot risk the seductive nature of conflict. This is a lesson Tolkien learned firsthand when he fought in World War II.

Ultimately, the One Ring to rule them all must be destroyed to prevent Sauron from returning once more. As long as his source of power lives on, Sauron is destined to return. Although at the beginning of the century he was considered dead Lord of the rings, Brotherhood of the ring, Sauron remained on the run as the One Ring passed between owners. Upcoming Prime Video Series The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power tells the story of Sauron’s first rise to power and the alliance between Men, Dwarves and Elves that brought down his armies.

Sauron is able to survive thanks to Prince Isildur’s last minute decision. As we see in the opening flashback sequence in The Fellowship of the Ring, the human warrior ultimately refuses to destroy the Ring of Omnipotence and throw it into the fires of Mount Doom. Isildur believes that the Ring of Omnipotence can be used for the benefit of mankind, but he lies to himself. He secretly desires power for himself.

Though Isildur’s decision leads to conflict Lord of the Rings, Rings of Power showrunner Patrick McKay said the show was meant to show him in a more likeable light. Comparison of Isildur with Al PacinoMichael Corleone Godfather The McKay Trilogy says that Isildur is saddled with a responsibility he should never have had, and turns into a villain over the course of the series. Isildur’s selfish decision is not an atrocity, but a tragedy of human nature.

Newbie Maxim Baldry takes on the role of the younger Isildur in Rings of Power. Unlike other human characters in the series, Isildur comes from a more humble background. He is a sailor from the land of Numenor and a descendant of the lords of Andunie. Many people in Numenor came to hate the elves. Lords of Andunie are among the “Loyal” clans that remain loyal to their allies. Isildur grew up in the growing city of Gondor and became a sailor. He establishes the colony of Minas Itil near Mordor and plants the White Tree of Gondor, which can be seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. After Minas Ithil is captured by Sauron during the War of the Last Alliance, Isildur joins the High King of the Elves, Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) and his father Elendil (Lloyd Owen) in their opposition to Sauron. The relationship between these characters will be fleshed out in Rings of Power.

As we know from The Fellowship of the Ring, Isildur takes up his father’s sword after he died at the Battle of Mount Doom. Isildur takes the ruins of his father’s weapons and uses them to kill Sauron and claim the Ring of Omnipotence for himself. Despite the protests of Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Isildur refuses to destroy the ring. This is another key relationship that will be fleshed out in Rings of Poweras Robert Aramayo was chosen as the younger version of Elrond. Although he initially supports his human allies, Elrond becomes cynical in his beliefs and decides that humanity can no longer be trusted.

Isildur succeeds in uniting the kingdoms of Andor and Gondor, but is eventually betrayed by the Ring of Power. As he rides with his sons outside the Gladden Fields, Isildur and his company are ambushed by orcs. Isildur dies in a skirmish, and the Ring of Omnipotence floats on the bottom of the river. He stays there until Sméagol (Andy Serkis) eventually discovers it and becomes corrupted by its power. Isildur’s actions have lasting consequences in Lord of the Rings. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) is tormented by the legacy of his direct ancestor. He discusses Isildur’s backstory with Boromir (Sean Bean). Aragorn wields a sword named Anduril, which the Elves of Rivendell forged from the pieces of Isildur’s weapon, Narsil. It is a constant reminder to Aragorn of his family’s history; his hesitation to take the ring from Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) is a direct result of Isildur’s corruption.

Although Boromir ultimately falls prey to the ring’s seductive nature, Aragorn is able to defy his family’s history and resist his urges. He fulfills the role that Isildur once played in uniting Gondor and Andor. Aragorn shows humility that Isildur never had. During his coronation, Aragorn tells his hobbit allies that they “bow to none” and has the crowd bow to the tiny creatures.

Rings of Power has the ability to improve the world Lord of the Rings. While the series may end on a tragic note, the lessons learned from the first war with Sauron allowed the Fellowship to right the wrongs of their ancestors. Let’s hope Isildur’s characterization makes Aragorn, Boromir and other human characters Lord of the Rings in a new light.

The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power The first two episodes will premiere on September 2 exclusively on Prime Video.
