So while we wonder where Better call Saul next week, let’s recap everything that happened in Nippy.
Saul is back
The last time we saw Jin was at the season five premiere. In Season 4, Gene has a heart attack and ends up in the hospital. On the way home, he gets into a taxi with an Albuquerque Isotopes air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror. Jin is afraid of taxi driver Jeff (Don Harvey in seasons 4 and 5, Pat Healy season 6) could recognize him from his Saul Goodman days and decides to get out of the cockpit as soon as possible. In Season 5, we’re taken to the mall during Gene’s lunch break when Jeff returns, claiming he’s sure Gene is really Saul Goodman and intimidating the ex-lawyer into repeating his famous TV line, “Better call Saul! » Jeff also indicates that he will contact Gene, threatening to blow his cover. At first Jean is desperate and decides to call Ed Galbraith Vanishing (Robert Forster), a person who can give anyone a new identity in a remote place. However, at the last moment, Jin hangs up and decides to solve the problem on his own.
The sixth season finally reveals what Jin chose to do in order to save his new life instead of running away again. At the beginning of the episode, we follow Marion (Carol Burnett), an elderly woman in an electric wheelchair makes purchases. On the way back, Marion crosses paths with Gene as he hangs posters for a missing dog named Nippy. As it turns out, Jin covered the sidewalk with snow to convince Marion to let him help. Once he’s near the wheelchair, Jin also cuts the wire to make sure he gets the older woman home. Gene’s charming personality invites him to dinner, and when Marion’s son returns from work, we finally understand what’s going on. As it turns out, Jeff is Marion’s son, and Gene used his con-artist skills to track down the bully and get him to back off.
Jin makes a deal with Jeff promising to show him how to get into the crime game. In exchange, Jeff agrees to leave Gene alone after they complete their first successful heist. Once they reach an understanding, Jin begins planning his first coup in years. Although he bonded with Jeff for survival, it soon becomes clear how much Jin enjoys the opportunity. As soon as he gets home from meeting Jeff, Jin takes his precious pinky ring out of the box in the closet and puts it on his finger. For those who need a reminder, the ring belonged to Marko Pasternak (Mel Rodriguez), Jimmy’s friend, a con artist who died young. Putting on the ring for Jin is almost a ritual, as he immediately feels his confidence returning. And now Saul is back.
Mutually Assured Destruction
After shifting his gaze to a department store in the mall, Jin decides to charm the two security guards who work the night shift with Cinnabons from his store. At first, Jin pretends to want to thank the security officer who helped him when he had a heart attack, but day after day he comes back with fresh cinnamon buns and a promise of friendship. Through his regular visits, Jin figures out when one of the guards leaves the security room to check on the mall and how long it takes his partner to finish his meal. Jin realizes he only has three minutes to rob a department store. It will be tough, but potentially very profitable.
Jin also visits the department store, measuring all the corridors and shop windows with his steps. With this detailed information in hand, Gene recreates the floor plan of the department store in real size using only wooden pegs and ribbons. Gene also uses the department store model to train Jeff, showing him the optimal path he must take in order to make a profit in three minutes.
When the day of the scam arrives, Jeff’s friend pretends to deliver to a department store late at night. Jeff’s supplies are hidden in a large wooden crate, and despite the store manager’s protests, Jin manages to convince her to leave the crate there until the morning. Jin then goes to the security room with the usual gifts. While Jin distracts the guards with a delicious Cinnabon treat, Jeff steals expensive items of clothing as quickly as possible. The plan goes smoothly until Jeff slips, hits his head, and passes out. Jin has to think fast to keep distracting the guard until Jeff gets back on his feet - so he pretends to cry, talking about being alone with no family or friends. Even though Jin’s emotional outburst is a game, there’s something right about it, as Saul has truly lost everyone he ever cared about. The guard tries to comfort Gene, and luckily for everyone, Jeff soon wakes up, stuffs the remaining pieces of clothing into a wooden box, and hides in the bathroom until the morning.
The next day, Gene meets with Jeff and his friend and threatens to expose the heist if they contact him again. Jean explains that they used an out-of-state truck, making their robbery a federal crime, so if they are ever caught, they will spend the rest of their lives in prison. Jeff’s excitement about his first prey as a thief vanishes from his face when Jean explains his policy of mutually assured destruction. If Jin falls, he will also take Jeff with him, and the true target of Jin’s new scam all along was Jeff.
Just three episodes before Better call Saul comes to an end, we still don’t know where the series is taking us. The following episodes can continue to tell Jin’s story in the future, go back to Sol’s past, or even be simultaneously placed next to Breaking Bad, presenting favorite moments from a fresh perspective. In any case, we’ll be here next week with our eyes on the TV.
