During an interview with Collider Perry Nemiroff per The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, Markella Kavena talked about being the Hobbit ancestor of the Shire and the weight that comes with her role. During the interview Kavena also explains how she subverts J. R. R. Tolkien Harfoot tradition, giving his people a reason for their curiosity.
In Tolkien’s mythology, the Harfoot people are long-time descendants of the Hobbits who inhabited the foothills of the Misty Mountains in the Anduin Valley, where they formed a historic friendship with the Dwarves. The Harfoots were also the first people to travel to Arnor in the West, having crossed paths with the Dunedain, who dubbed them hobbits. Finally, the Harfoots helped colonize the Shire, where the hobbits would live in peace until the Third Age of Middle-earth.
In the upcoming series, fans of Tolkien’s universe will follow Harfoot on his journey to the west and find out how the hobbits’ curiosity has helped them survive adversity. Speaking about his character, Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot, Cavena said:
“I think she has an innate curiosity, that’s for sure. And I think I really wanted to make sure that it didn’t seem like something purely out of selfish interest in the unknown, that she was well aware that she had to bear this responsibility. And from a very young age, she had to take care of her siblings, her family, and the community, so she probably had to grow up too fast. And so I thought it just made sense to justify it in a desire to subvert the Harfoot tradition, to improve the quality of life, and that the curiosity for the unknown also comes from that. It comes from the idea that the fear of risk can be greater than the risk itself. And she just constantly insists on it, but sometimes it puts people in a little danger, but it’s well-meaning.”
