It was an unforgettable week at San Diego Comic Con. While the focus was on the latest news from DC and Marvel, there was a lot of exciting news related to the world of TV. One of the most intriguing upcoming series comes from Rick and Morty co-author Dan Harmon titled Krapopolis. Although the series will premiere on Fox in 2023, animation fans got their first glimpse of it at SDCC on Saturday.

Infused with ancient Greek mythology, the animated series follows “an imperfect family of humans, gods and monsters as they try to rule one of the world’s first cities without killing each other.” The synopsis begins with a hilarious narration that jokes about humanity’s lack of knowledge of the world before it can be “shown at Comic Con”. However, humanity eventually found time to build cities, which brings us to this brief overview. The preview scene focuses on Tyrannis, the mortal son of the goddess, voiced by Richard Ayoade (IT Crowd), organizing a town meeting to fight Medusa. He is trying to build a city that will match his father’s name, who happens to be the king of Krapopolis. However, he is unable to do so when Medusa turns everyone to stone. His negotiator can’t breathe either as we see the hilarious aftermath of his turning to stone.

Some highlights of the clip include Deliria, the self-destructive mother goddess Tyrannis, voiced by Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), frustrated by the human fear of death, a city dweller whose eyes are burned out by glasses with advanced ancient technologies, and the severed head of Medusa, which accidentally turned the entire city to stone. The humor of this show will definitely come from how hilariously incompetent the city of Krapopolis is, and Rick and Morty’s casual “anything goes” comedic style can be felt in this preview.

Krapopolis will have a special preview on Fox on November 27, 2022 before the series officially debuts on the network in 2023. Also, that’s not all, as the series’ website is already up and running. You can get exclusive digital gifts, including the Krap Chicken NFT, and win a trip to the real Greece. If this SDCC preview is any indication, Krapopolis will be another endlessly funny, entertaining and very adult animated series from Harmon. The ancient Greek setting and the premise of a city trying to live in harmony while at the mercy of the gods has a lot of fun potential. While we wait for our expanded look at Krapopolis later this year, you can view the full SDCC review below.
