Sometimes you need to change your point of view to see something new. He moved from words to deeds because he wanted to see what everyday work on board looks like. One day he played the role of a steward.
Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter wanted to see what the day-to-day duties of the airline’s employees face, but instead of relying on surveys or interviews with managers, he decided to serve passengers on the route from Frankfurt to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, throughout the day.
“I have been with the Lufthansa Group for many years, but I have never had the opportunity to work as a flight attendant. And to be honest, it was extremely interesting and challenging! I was surprised at how much there is to organize, especially if something doesn’t go according to plan - for example, the dishes offered on the menu were different from those on board, ”he shared his experience on LinkedIn.
Lufthansa CEO on the challenges of working at night
Jens Ritter wrote that he had flown as a pilot, so he “assumed he knew the difficulties of night flying”. However, what he experienced surprised him. “Being considerate and kind when your biological clock tells you it’s time for bed is something completely different. The team was great and immediately accepted me into their team. Thanks to their support, I was able to help in business class on the way to Riyadh. On the way back, I served economy class guests, ”he said.
He assured that the work on board was very informative, since the decisions made by managers in the offices are different from those that have to be made in the air.
Other airline executives also served passengers
Ritter is not the first executive to decide to see for himself what day-to-day work at his company looks like. In May, KLM CEO Marjan Rintel was seen serving passengers on a flight from Los Angeles to Amsterdam. Sun Country CEO Jude Bricker was previously seen doing multiple shifts on the plane.
In January, Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran was seen helping airport employees hand out luggage to passengers. This happened at a time when, due to difficulties, the airline was unable to properly process luggage and faced criticism from passengers.
