We are the second manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles

Must read

Poland ranks second in the world in the production of batteries for electric vehicles. 3/4 of lithium-ion batteries and about half of all electric vehicles are made in China.

The production of one electric car requires the use of more than 200 kg of minerals, which is 6 times more than in the case of a conventional car. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), this process uses 2.4 times more copper (53 kg vs. 22 kg), 2.2 times more manganese (24 kg vs. 11 kg), and lithium (9 kg) , nickel (40 kg), cobalt (13 kg) and graphite (67 kg).

Most electric vehicles are made in Chinese factories.

The electrification of the fleets of the EU or the US is currently dependent on China. According to the IEA, the Celestial Empire, although it does not have significant deposits of lithium, nickel, cobalt or graphite, is a leader in the processing of raw materials and the production of battery components. China also produces 3/4 of lithium-ion batteries and about half of all electric vehicles. Europe accounts for more than 1/4 of the global assembly of electric vehicles, lists the Polish Institute of Economics in the latest Economic Weekly.

Despite the absence of critical raw materials in Europe, European countries can increase their importance in the electric mobility industry, from the production of components to the processing of raw materials and parts from electric vehicles.

Poland ranks second in the world in the production of batteries for electric vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries account for over 2.4% of all Polish exports. The value of the battery sector has increased 38 times over the past six years, from about PLN 1 billion in 2017 to more than PLN 38 billion in 2022.

Build another plant for spare parts for electric vehicles

Plants of the world’s largest companies have been established in Poland, including LG, whose plant, after expansion, will supply more than 1 million batteries per year to the market. The plant of the Chinese concern Guotai-Huarong in Prusica, whose construction began in 2020, should produce electrolyte for 0.5 million electric vehicles per year. In addition, BMZ and Posco also have factories in Poland.

According to BloombergNEF forecasts, Poland will continue to rank high in the 6th place in the supply chain in the world. Already in the second half of 2023, another plant for spare parts for electric vehicles should be built in Poland - such plans were announced by the South Korean company Posco. Planned investments also include ANP Enertech, Volkswagen and SK Nexilis plants.
