The creators of AI chatbot Ernie Bot boast that their product has outperformed the popular ChatGPT. Baidu, the Chinese equivalent of Google, has calculated what Ernie is better at than his Western competitor.
In March, Chinese giant Baidu began testing Ernie Bot, China’s first response to the hugely popular ChatGPT. Now the company has debuted a new version of AI and immediately hit the competitor.
Ernie 3.5 vs GPT-4 - which AI is stronger?
Baidu recently introduced Ernie 3.5, the latest language model that is the basis for the Ernie Bot chatbot. The system has been tested and compared with GPT-4, which is the same basis for ChatGPT.
The company cites an experiment conducted by state-run China Science Daily. Both language models were subjected to a series of tests. Among other things, it was a set of AGIEval questions. This is a test developed by Microsoft to evaluate the artificial general intelligence (AGI) of a system. It consists of very different questions, combining more than 20 knowledge tests in different languages and with different levels of difficulty - from Abitur-style tasks to legal exams.
Ernie 3.5 was expected to score higher in AGIEval, as well as outperform GPT 4 in C-Eval - similar to the previous one, but focused on Chinese. Theoretically, this means that Ernie Bot could be “smarter” than ChatGPT.
Baidu also noted that the Chinese language model has better learning and inference efficiency. This means that the tool can be developed faster and cheaper than its competitor from the West.
What is Baidu Ernie Bot?
As we wrote in Wprost.pl, Ernie is an artificial intelligence model in development since 2019, which was taught natural language based on a huge amount of human-written texts. As advertised by Baidu, the AI is “excellent at understanding and reproducing natural language.”
Ernie Bot is the next step in this process, that is, turning the experiment into a product for consumers. Initially, Ernie Bot was planned as a standalone application, but over time it will be more and more integrated into numerous Baidu services.
Like the American Google, Baidu offers Internet search, map and navigation services, as well as cloud storage. At the same time, his portfolio also includes, among other things: a digital encyclopedia similar to Wikipedia or the Baidu Tieba social network.
