July 2 is traded on Sunday? Where will we shop?

The law prohibiting trading on Sundays and public holidays came into force in 2018. Since then, the regulations have been amended several times. During the first period of the law, non-commercial Sundays were held every first and last Sunday of the month. From 2020, we will only shop seven Sundays a year.

Since 2020, we have 7 trading Sundays a year. In 2023 it is planned:

• January 29;

• April 2;

• April 30;

• June 25;

• August 27;

• December 17;

• December 24th.

This means that Sunday, July 2nd is a non-trading Sunday. On this day, most shops and malls will be closed. The next Sunday shopping opportunity is scheduled for August.

Who is not prohibited from trading on Sunday?

There are several exceptions to the Sunday and Public Holiday Trade Prohibition Act. These are shops that may be open whether or not it falls on a trading Sunday. There are 32 objects in the list in total. Among them we can find:

• confectionery and bakeries;

• cafe;

• gas stations;

• florists;

• newspaper shops;

• pharmacies;

• animal hospitals;

• post offices;

• shops operating at the station or at the airport;

• ice cream shops;

• restaurants and bars.

In addition, you can shop on Sunday in small local shops. They can be opened after one condition is met. Behind the counter must be the owner or one of his close relatives. The same rules apply to franchised stores. Therefore, on July 2, we can go shopping in Żabka or Carrefour Express stores.

What to do if the ban is violated?

For violation of the trade ban, the owner can be fined from PLN 1,000 to PLN 100,000. If an entrepreneur repeatedly violates the rules, he may even face imprisonment.
