A small atom is approaching. EU approves cooperation between Orlen and Synthos

Must read

The European Commission approved the creation of a company by PKN Orlen and Synthos Green Energy, which will implement the project for the construction of small nuclear reactors in Poland.

“The company will develop and implement small and micro-modular reactors (SMR and MMR respectively), explore potential reactor locations, and after the launch of nuclear power plants, will commercialize electricity generated using SMR/MMR technology in Poland. Orlen is an oil refinery and fuel distributor. SGE is developing and implementing zero-emission energy technologies, the European Commission said in a release.

Starting a company does not raise concerns about competition.

MSD as an opportunity for local communities

At the end of 2021, PKN Orlen and Synthos Green Energy signed an investment agreement to establish a joint venture, Orlen Synthos Green Energy. The main goal of the project will be the preparation and commercialization of small nuclear reactor technology in Poland, in particular the BWRX-300 reactors of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy. The head of Orlen predicted that the first SMR reactors could appear in Poland in 2029.

A small nuclear reactor with a capacity of about 300 MW is capable of generating the energy needed to power a city of 150,000 people a year. Equally important, one modular reactor of about 300 MW can prevent emissions of 0.3 to 2.0 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, depending on the type of fuel it replaces (e.g. hard coal or lignite) . Thus, small nuclear reactors, on the one hand, are non-emission and the cost of their operation is low, on the other hand, they are a source of stable energy supply, which in wartime and with limited access to raw materials can become a remedy for many problems from which the world suffers. , including Poland.
