A year ago, a pepper cost less than 13 PLN, now you have to pay almost 30 PLN for it. Why has the price of pepper increased so much? Industry representatives and experts note, in particular, the increase in electricity bills.

This season pepper is twice as expensive as last year. As Pavel Miziak, from the board of the Polish Paprika Producers Association, calculated in an interview with TVN24 Biznes, in the previous season, the cost of the product ranged from PLN 12.90 to PLN 14.90. Meanwhile, the price now ranges from 24 to 28 zł. Mizyak admits that in previous years there were times when a pepper cost about 30 zł, but this was temporary and lasted about a week.

Pepper prices are on the rise. Cause Expert

– Today it takes longer, but we are at the peak of prices, because we see that the consumer no longer accepts such prices. Very visible substitution of goods - Mysiak emphasizes.

Jakub Olipra, senior economist at Credit Agricole Bank, admits in an interview with TVN24 Biznes that growers are facing increasing cost pressures from high fertilizer and energy prices, a particularly important issue in the case of greenhouse crops.

- Rising labor costs are also a problem. This is reflected in the prices. In turn, the factor constraining the growth of vegetables last year was their relatively good harvest. It is worth noting that the increase in the price of vegetables was still relatively small compared to other food products such as flour, vegetable oils, bread, meat or sugar. says the expert.

The representative of the Polish Association of Paprika Producers also points to high energy prices. “They made agriculture unregulated.” Pavel Mizyak says

Vegetable prices will rise

Credit Agricole forecasts that average annual vegetable prices will rise by about 12.1% this year. Jakub Olipra notes that “much will depend on this year’s harvest, which is difficult to predict at this stage.”
