The first LNG carrier Orlen is preparing for the voyage

The first gas carrier Orlen, which will deliver LNG to Poland, will soon depart from the Korean port of Ulsan.

The first LNG carrier Orlen is getting ready for its maiden voyage. The crew is preparing the ship to carry liquefied natural gas, according to Orlen on Twitter, their first task will be to cool the gas tanks to -130 degrees.

“In total, our fleet will be equipped with 8 such gas carriers, complementing Baltic Pipe’s supplies,” writes PKN Orlen.

“LNG is still a dangerous cargo, so you need to be prepared for this work. I am proud to work on this newly built ship,” says Capt. Vincent Prudor.

Two of Orlen’s eight LNG carriers are due to begin carrying LNG in the first week of the new year. The ships are almost 300 meters long, and their tanks hold about 174,000 cubic meters of liquefied gas. One such transport is able to meet the needs of Polish households in gas for about a week.

“Our own fleet will allow us to efficiently import LNG, primarily from the United States. Sea deliveries already cover about 30 percent. needs of the country and, along with the Baltic Pipe, is the most important source of gas for Poland,” wrote Daniel Obaitek, President of PKN Orlen, on Twitter.

Rent of gas carriers

The first two LNG carriers will start regular service in 2023. Two more will join the Orlen fleet in 2024 and four in 2025.

Orlen will operate the LNG carriers under a ten-year charter agreement with Norwegian LNG carrier specialist Knutsen OAS Shipping. The gas carriers will be at the exclusive disposal of the Polish concern.
