Pumpkin is extremely popular in Ukraine, because many dishes are prepared from it and even jam is made. Of course, it is better to grow pumpkins in a separate area - then care is simplified. However, not everyone has this opportunity due to limited space. The fruits of this “sunny berry” are used as a useful dietary product, medicine, animal feed, etc. This is a real barn of vitamins. owner from Volhynia Peter Kravchuk.
“First, I plant potatoes (in rows under the plow), with an interval of 20 cm, and sprinkle with manure. The second furrow is empty and so on. After that, I mark the “points” for planting a pumpkin in a square-nested way: in a row at a distance of at least 3 meters, and between lines - 4 meters. We mark these places with sticks 1 meter high (they remain on the field until the harvest, serving as a guide).
This culture requires a lot of nutrients. Therefore, I dig holes with a volume of two or three buckets, which I fill with a mixture of humus, the upper fertile layer and a little wood ash. Lightly compacted, watered. After 2-3 days, seeds or seedlings can be planted in special pots so that the root system is not injured. The similarity of good seeds reaches about 60-70 percent. Therefore, for a guarantee, I plant 2-3 grains in one hole, but with a distance of 10-15 cm. Then I leave one most developed sprout, pinch or transplant the other“.
Pumpkin is a heat-loving crop, so the owner notes that for a young staircase, even a short frost is fatal: tender green leaves turn black after a few hours.
“Therefore, it is extremely important to choose the optimal time for landing. Also, do not forget that the mentioned vegetables do not grow well in the shade of trees, fences, buildings and in waterlogged areas.
I immediately cover the landing sites with glass liter jars. They perform two functions: they protect from frost and become an obstacle to crows, pigeons, starlings, which take out seeds and pull out young shoots. When the plants grow up, I replace the jars with old buckets without a bottom. Practice has shown that this is a good wind protection. In the end, during the period of frost, I cover such containers with bags. So that nothing drowns out the pumpkins at the initial stage, I pull out potato shoots around them within a radius of 0.5 meters. I also spud high, make holes for irrigation. I’m still mulching. Then the vegetation will be intensive“.
Recall that in May there are three days when nothing can be sown or planted.
