How to care for seedlings in the open field: tips from experienced gardeners

Must read

The time will soon come when seedlings that have been grown at home and fed to grow strong will be planted in the soil.

Experienced gardeners give advice on how to adapt the plant to new conditions, writes ogorodniki.com.

Seedling hardening

Approximately two weeks before landing, it is important to begin the “hardening” procedure. Usually this process begins with the fact that at night the air temperature is reduced. This can be done by taking seedlings to the balcony, if it is glazed. And already 5 days before planting, the plants can be on the street around the clock. To do this, they can be placed on an open balcony or garden.

Optimal time

Young plants should be planted in the soil, making sure that frost is not expected. The timing of planting different types of plants should be taken into account: early crops can be sown in March, cold-resistant ones from the end of April, and heat-loving ones are transplanted into the soil only at the end of May.

Transfer

Seedlings grown in peat pots are placed in the dimples along with them. Plants are taken out of the general containers along with a clod of earth. Sprouts are removed from cardboard and paper cups by cutting the container from top to bottom. Seedlings are taken out of plastic containers by holding the stem and turning it upside down.
The less the roots were injured during planting, the higher the likelihood that the transplant will be successful.

The day before planting seedlings, it should be poured abundantly with warm water to soften the soil. When planting with one hand, the plant is held by the root along with an earthy clod, and with the other - by the stem. Each plant must be carefully placed in a hole slightly larger than the earth ball. Then the plant is sprinkled with soil, lightly pressed so that there is no void between the roots, and watered abundantly.

Care

The first time after planting, the plant will adapt, so you should not expect rapid growth. It is better to protect seedlings from diseases in a preventive mode, and not wait for signs of danger. More often seedlings suffer from root or stem rot. To do this, you should buy special preparations and process according to the instructions.

As soon as the weather starts to improve, young plants need to be protected from the sun, because the light level in the room is much lower. For shading, a white non-woven material is ideal, which is stretched over arcs or built like a canopy.

In the absence of rain, water, monitoring the condition of the soil: it should not be dry, but not too wet.

A sign that the “move” was successful and the seedling has settled into a new place is the appearance of young leaves, which at first will differ in color from the old ones.
