On Friday, March 3, in London were the next auction of the auction house Sotheby’s. The main lot was the painting “View of Murnau with Church II” by Wassily Kandinsky. She was bought for 37.2 million pounds (about $45 million). And this is a new price record for the works of Kandinsky. The name of the buyer was not disclosed.
The painting has a tragic story. Kandinsky painted it in 1910 during a period of creative transition from figurativeness to abstraction. She entered a series of landscapes made by the artist in Germany in the city of Murnau. He lived there for some time at the beginning of the 20th century.
The painting belonged to the Jewish couple Siegbert and Johanna Margaret Stern. The landscape was confiscated from the spouses by the Nazis. The Sterns became victims of the Holocaust.
Since 1951 the painting “View of Murnau with Church II” has been in the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The Stern heirs demanded her return for a long time. The museum gave them a masterpiece by Kandinsky at the end of 2022. And now, after a little more than two months, the landscape was put up for auction.
The previous auction record for Kandinsky’s works was set in 2017. Then, for almost 42 million dollars, the “Painting with White Lines”, which the artist painted in 1913, was sold.
Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866. 1871 the family moved to Odessa. There Vasily graduated from the gymnasium and received an artistic and musical education.
After the revolution of 1917, Kandinsky did not take long to organize the protection of monuments and the creation of the Russian Academy of Artistic Sciences. In 1921 he moved to Berlin. Seven years later, he took German citizenship. However, in 1933, the Nazis came to power in Germany, and the artist was again forced to wander. He moved to Paris. He was granted French citizenship in 1939. Kandinsky died on December 13, 1944. He was buried in the suburbs of Paris.
Earlier, FACTS reported that a painting by the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $39.4 million.
