The military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is very quickly going through exercises on mastering Western weapons in order to return to the defense of the country as soon as possible. CNN told about it ex-CIA director David Petraeus. According to him, Western colleagues said that Ukrainians go through training very quickly. He believes that Ukrainian troops will be able to significantly push back Russian troops this summer, but this will depend on the supply of weapons and strategy.
“This requires a successful combined war - a complementary approach, when different types of combat units support each other, he told CNN at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. - You can make an enemy crumble and ideally fall apart, and it’s possible this summer, at least locally. And hopefully this is enough to cut off the land crossing that Russia has set up allowing it to connect with Crimea along the southeast coast of Ukraine. If you cut that off, you can start isolating Crimea as a logistical support center and then you can split up the Russian troops. And if you can destroy the bridge across the Kerch Strait, you will really isolate them.”
If this scenario is implemented in combination with long-range weapons for highly mobile artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), the conflict will have a very different dynamic, Petraeus said. If Russian casualties continue to pile up, at some point the Kremlin will have to admit that this war is not viable on the battlefield.
“And if you continue to strengthen economic, financial and export controls, you are making Russian troops unviable in the rear as well,” he said.
He also noted that Ukrainians who are learning to use Western weaponry seem to be doing so at an astonishing rate.
“According to (Western colleagues), Ukrainians are just rushing through the training… They have to speed up the training very much. And even when they return to the barracks after a very long day of training, they read manuals. They want to get back to fighting, to protecting their families.” - he said.
Earlier, FACTS reported that in the United States, Democrats and Republicans united to urge Biden to send F-16s to Ukraine.
