On Wednesday, December 28, the United States decided to impose restrictions on entry into the country for those arriving from China. The US Department of Health believes that this measure is absolutely justified and does not carry any political overtones. “From January 5, all air passengers two years of age or older departing from China will be required to take a test no more than two days before departure from China, Hong Kong or Macau and present a negative test result to airlines upon departure.”- the statement says.
Earlier, the Chinese authorities announced the lifting of the ban on foreign travel for citizens of the country from January 8. It has been active since the beginning of the pandemic.
The lifting of the ban, according to the United States, was caused by recent mass protests in China, and not at all by an improvement in the epidemic situation. Washington notes that Beijing continues to hide data on the number of coronavirus infections. The Chinese Communist Party’s abrupt abandonment of strict quarantine measures has led to a surge in new cases, raising the possibility of new variants of the virus emerging.
Not only the United States, but also Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, India, and Italy have tightened control over the entry of Chinese citizens.
The newspaper La Repubblica reported on December 28 that at the airport of Milan on one of the flights from China that landed the other day, the coronavirus was found in 52% of passengers. In the USA, Japan, EU countries, they fear that the flow of Chinese citizens to them in January is growing. Just half an hour after Beijing announced the lifting of restrictions, travel agency websites registered a tenfold increase compared to December last year in searches for destinations. The most popular destinations were Macau, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and South Korea.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbing immediately accused the West of “inflating fear and distorting Chinese policy in the fight against kovyd.” He said that the reaction of other countries to decisions made in China should be “scientifically sound and proportionate”, it “should not interfere with the normal interaction between people.”
At the same time, he did not explain why Beijing stopped publishing statistics on new cases of infection with kovyd and deaths from it. Unofficial sources in China reported repeatedly in December that many hospitals in the country were overcrowded, and the death rate among the elderly had increased significantly.
Earlier cited the opinion of the famous American epidemiologist Eric Liang Feigl-Ding. He warns of a new wave of capacitive deaths as Beijing has lifted tough restrictions due to the country’s extremely low vaccination rate.
