In Ukraine, scammers who “earn” on the relatives of prisoners of war have become more active - SBU

During the war, not only swindlers who promise citizens “social assistance”, but take their money, became more active, but also those who speculate on a very sensitive issue - prisoners.

According to armyinform, this was reported by representative of the Security Service of Ukraine Artem Dekhtyarenko.

“The SBU sees one rather negative and even threatening trend regarding the topic of prisoners of war. The security service records an increase in fraud - fraudulent schemes related to relatives of prisoners of war “he noted.

Fraudsters call relatives of prisoners and offer to help if people are willing to pay them. Their prices depend on the emotional state of the relatives of the fighters.

The security service, conducting a pre-trial investigation, found that the swindlers offer, in particular, to give the opportunity to talk to the alleged prisoner on the phone. For this requires from 10 to 50 thousand hryvnia. Assistance in the “liberation” from captivity is estimated at 50-200 thousand hryvnia, and for the “return of the body” of the deceased, about 10 thousand hryvnia.

Anton Dekhtyarenko noted that scammers disappear when they receive money. Or they invent new reasons for the relatives of the prisoners to pay more and more.

Swindlers monitor social networks, collecting information about the missing and the dead, as well as about their loved ones. They use this data when talking with relatives of prisoners. Typically, phone scammers are located in temporarily occupied territories, and accomplices take people who are in government-controlled territory. The latter are directly involved in the search for information, help to make calls to other manipulations.

The SBU once again noted that the issue of the release of prisoners is in the exclusive competence of state authorities.

Ukrainians who encounter scammers are advised to:

  • not to provide information about the prisoner and their own personal data to anyone other than government agencies;

  • in case you received a phone call with such offers, please contact the hotline of the Security Service of Ukraine at 0 800 501 482.

“The SBU is actively working in this direction and has already detained several scammers. We urge you to be vigilant and use only official sources of information.”- emphasized Artem Dekhtyarenko.

Earlier, the director of the recruitment department of an international employment company, Anna Jobolda, warned that scammers also profit from people looking for work abroad. Scammers can take money for paperwork, and then simply do not get in touch or help to arrive abroad, but subsequently they provide work with other, worse conditions.
