Fedha is a news anchor that doesn’t exist. One of the leading radio stations from the Middle East has presented the world with a virtual artificial intelligence system that is hard to distinguish from the real footage of a journalist’s vision.
Soon, artificial intelligence may take over the work of TV presenters. The first video has appeared on the Internet in which Fedha is the virtual identity of a journalist who can read news on a given topic in a suitable natural manner.
AIFedha host to debut on Twitter
Over the weekend, the official Kuwait News account posted a 13-second video about the new artificial intelligence system. Fedha is a journalistic avatar with blond hair and light skin combined with a text-to-speech system.
“I am Fedha, the first presenter in Kuwait to work with the Kuwait News artificial intelligence system. What messages do you prefer? I look forward to your feedback,” the avatar says, reportedly in realistic-sounding Arabic.
Fedha will read Kuwait news
Kuwait News is an account with over 1.2 million followers, so the presentation quickly went viral online. The video has been viewed by over 425,000 people so far. The station itself is affiliated with the Kuwait Times, a publication founded in 1961 as the region’s first English-language daily.
Abdullah Boftein, associate editor of both companies, argues that Fedha should offer “new innovative content” to Internet users.
At the moment there are plans for a virtual presenter who will present news digests on Twitter. It may also be changed in the near future to speak with a more distinct Kuwaiti accent.
Fedha is a popular traditional Kuwaiti name meaning “silver”. We always think of robots as silver, so we combined the two concepts,” explains Boften.
