Marcin Mozonek gave an extensive interview in which he gave a clear assessment of the new system of games of the European Championship. The former Poland national team center claims that while volleyball is being promoted properly, it is not being done properly.
Polish volleyball players won the group stage of the European Championship without any problems. Of the five matches they played, they lost only one set, playing against the Netherlands. Apart from this team, they defeated the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Denmark and Montenegro respectively. This Sunday, September 10, Nikola Grbic’s team will play in the 1/8 finals against Belgium. Marcin Mozdzonek closely monitors the actions of the Whites and Reds, as well as other teams, and has noticed a certain discrepancy in the competition system.
Marcin Mozdzonek does not approve of the new system of holding European Championships
The former center of the Polish national team and, among others, Asseco Resovia Rzeszów argue that the expansion of the European Championship to 24 teams does not have a positive impact on their quality. In an interview with Przegląd Sportowy Onet, he noted that there is a large disproportion in the quality of play between several teams, which was felt, in particular, in the “white-red” match against Montenegro. In his opinion, looking at what happens on dance floors is not inspiring.
– This system is not like the classic European championships that we are used to. Of course, it is necessary to promote volleyball, but the tool for this is chosen correctly. The product that is the European Championship has become blurry and unattractive to the eye. Forgive me, but watching the Denmark-North Macedonia match, with all due respect to these teams, is not something we would devote an hour and a half of our lives to. Additionally, there are 38 teams in the CEV rankings and 24 teams competing in the tournament. Therefore, we cannot talk about the elitism of these competitions. Let’s hold matches in different countries, but at the same time show high-quality volleyball, - said the former representative of Poland.
He also added that the Wisla team with such matches only delays the wait for the most important moments of the competition and they are more like friendship matches than a game with the highest stakes. According to Marcin Mozonek, the Poles should also have no problems in the match with the Belgians, since, according to him, both teams are at completely different levels.
