Polish volleyball players storm the group stage of the European Championship. Nikola Grbić’s men beat North Macedonia 3-0 and have two matches left to play against the last teams in the table. The Serbian coach was dissatisfied with the work of the referee Ksenia Yurkovic. After one of the actions, he incredulously covered his face with his hand.
The Polish national volleyball team started fighting at the European Championship last week. Volleyball players of Nikola Grbic after winning the Nations League in 2023 are the favorites for gold. So far, they have not met a single opponent in the group that would make them fight hard. Only the Dutch, theoretically the second strongest team, managed to interrupt the Byalo-Chervona set.
Nikola Grbic surprised by referee’s attitude
In the last match of the group stage, the Poles defeated the hosts of the Macedonian championship with a score of 3:0. Only in the second set, to the surprise of the fans, was the opponent much lower in the rating able to score more than 20 points. In other games, the opponents failed to score even 15 points.
Unexpectedly, in the first set, Nikola Grbic had reason to be very surprised. Initially, the game was played in an even atmosphere. The Poles were leading 13:11 when the Serb drew attention to the double rebound of the North Macedonia volleyball player. Judge Ksenia Yurkovych paid no attention to this. After some time, the Serbian requested a challenge related to whether the ball touched the field line after Bartos Kurek’s attack, which turned out to be conceded. Immediately after that, the captain of the national team approached the breeder, giving him the words of the referee, who said that “perhaps she was mistaken”, not noticing the double hit. The whole situation was noticed by the journalist Jakub Baltserski.
Grbic covered his face with his hand, as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Despite the controversial game and the lost challenge, the Poles caught a phenomenal series. From a controversial situation, they won 12 goals, while the Macedonians only one.
The Poles will play with the Danes
The Poles will return to competition on Tuesday 5 August. Then they will meet with Denmark, which pushed back the group, which has won only three sets so far.
