Legendary American track and field athlete, two-time Olympic champion Jim Hines, who was the first in the world to run the 100-meter race in less than 10 seconds, has died at the age of 76, according to World Athletics.
For the first time, a sprinter ran out from 10 seconds back at the 1968 US Championships in Sacramento. But since this result (9.9 seconds) was not recorded by an electronic stopwatch, Hines’ world record was not approved.
But in the same year at the Olympic Games in Mexico City, an American won gold with a score of 9.95 seconds, forever entering the history of world athletics (by the way, that 100-meter race was the first Olympic final in which only black athletes took part). . Moreover, at the games in Mexico, Hines became a two-time Olympic champion, winning the 4 × 100 relay as part of the US team with a world record.
Note that the world achievement of Jim Hines lasted for 15 years, until in 1983 his compatriot Calvin Smith ran the 100-meter race in 9.93 seconds.
Following the end of a stellar career in track and field, Hines played in the National Football League for the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs without much success. In 1979, Jim was inducted into the US Athletics Hall of Fame.

Earlier, FACTS reported that the legendary Olympic champion, whose name was given to the revolutionary high jump, had died.
