Cameroon’s match against Serbia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar promised to be interesting as both teams lost their first group matches. However, few people probably expected that as many as six goals would be scored in the clash.
Cameroon and Serbia lost their first World Cup group matches in Qatar, losing respectively to Switzerland and Brazil. A score of zero meant that for both teams, the head-to-head clash was a “to be or not to be” meeting at the World Championships, which foreshadowed a fierce battle for victory.
World Cup 2022. Serbia had its opportunities
Initially, the game was played mainly in the middle zone, but the Serbs created the first dangerous situation in the 10th minute. Aleksandar Mitrovic moved into goal position, dodged Nicolas N’Koulou in the penalty area and aimed straight at the post guarded by Davis Espassy. A few minutes later, N’Kulu responded with a long-range strike, but his attempt missed badly.
Mitrovic caused a lot of trouble for the Cameroonian defense and in the 17th minute was again close to scoring a goal. The Serbian striker received the ball, unsuccessfully knocked out by Knowhow Tolo, and shot from a few meters, but wide of the goal. The match turned out to be very open, every minute after Mitrovic’s shot, Pierre Kunde had a good moment, who tried to hit Vanya Milinkovic-Savic with a shot from an acute angle. However, the goalkeeper of the Serbian national team managed to save his team from losing and parried the ball for a corner.
Cameroon opened the scoring
Although the Serbs had two good chances early in the match, it was their opponents who opened the scoring. In the 29th minute, Kunde scored sixteen from a corner, extended N’Kula in the center, the ball fell under the feet of Jean-Charles Castelletto, who shot from close range into the goal. Even before the break, Kunde could have increased the score to 2-0, but the representative of Cameroon completed his team’s counterattack with a shot at the goalkeeper and a missed rebound.
Rigobert Song’s players realized in extra time that they love to take revenge on missed opportunities. Dusan Tadic took a free-kick in the sixteenth, and there Strahinya Pavlovich, without supervision, scored the ball into the net with an accurate header. After scoring a goal, the Serbs went on the attack again and after about two minutes they led 2:1. Andre Zambo Angissa lost the ball before sixteen, the ball went to Sergei Milinkovic-Savic, who put his team ahead with an accurate shot on the post.
Crazy second half of match between Cameroon and Serbia
The beginning of the second half was dictated by the Serbs, who over and over again pestered the defense of the African team. This made itself felt in the 53rd minute, when Dragan Stojkovic’s wards played “grandfather” in the opponents’ penalty area. Mitrovic finished the lace action with a shot from several meters, increasing his team’s lead to 3:1.
Cameroon responded in the 64th minute. Vincent Abubakar received a cross from his own half of the field, outplayed one of the defenders and passed Milinkovic-Savic with a canopy. Two minutes later, the score was 3:3 after Abubakar received a pass to the right flank, played in front of the penalty area, and there the advancing Erik Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the ball into the net.
A draw did not satisfy any of the teams, so at the end of the match we witnessed the struggle on both sides of the field. However, the score 3:3 has not changed, and the division of points, of course, most pleased the Swiss and Brazilians, who will start their match on 17.
