Byalo-Chervone brilliantly started this meeting. They were confident and efficient in attack, with Magdalena Stisiak and Zuzanna Gorecka in the lead. Our players quickly gained a few points advantage. In addition, our players managed to stop Croatian leaders Lucia Mlynar and Samantha Fabris.
“I do not know what happened…”. This is clearly stated by Malgorzata Glinka in an interview with Fact.
Opponents caught the rhythm in the middle of the set and reduced losses from six to three points. The Croats were able to stop Gurecka, as well as create problems with a pass for our players. The Croatian national team was interrupted by coach Stafano Lavarini’s break, after which our volleyball players returned to their best game. The magnificent finish of Stisyak and Olivia Ruzhansky brought victory in the first set 25:19.
The second game was better started by the Croats, who were able to stop the next attacks of our players, and they played very well in the game and were leading 6:2 at the beginning of the set. Byalo-Chervona began to compensate for the losses and, mainly thanks to Ruzhansky, reduced the losses to one point. Agnieszka Korneluk (formerly Konkolevskaya) also did her job in the bloc.
However, the Poles had problems in the game, which was ruthlessly exploited by their opponents, who once again broke four points ahead, while Martina Samadan was in the lead in the Balkan team. The Croats even led 21:17, but the Poles managed to cut their losses down to just one point. However, that’s all that concerns the game of our players in this set. The opponents seized the initiative and won 25:21.

The victory of Polish women at the opening of the tournament
Ruzhanski started the third set very well and returned to her efficiency from the first set. On the other hand, things were going very well for Mlinar in the grid, and the Croats were slightly in the lead. The Croatians drove each other, and the Poles sometimes had problems with the distribution of the attack. This resulted in as much as 5 points of advantage for the opponents in this phase of the set.
The game of our players broke down in almost every element. The Poles had problems with the completion of the attack, with safety, and with their mistakes they even gave a hand to their rivals, who took the lead by eight points. The Croats, weakened by a big advantage, began to make mistakes, and Kornelyuk returned to a good block, the loss of our players was reduced to three points.
A good part of the game gave our players new energy. The impetus for the attack was given by Kamila Witkowska, who not only successfully attacked, but also added a pinpoint block. Byalo-Chervony raced for a long time, but finally made up for lost time and by 22:20 took the lead. Monika Galkowska played a big role in the game, taking responsibility for the result at this stage. The Poles played the nervous ending better, kept more composure and won the second game 25:23.
The Croatians got off to a better start in the fourth set, quickly taking a two-point lead. Again, the Poles had problems with the reception, but the opponents missed the serve. Stysyak was slowly returning to a successful game, and our players were leading 10:7 in this phase.
This is how much the Poles earned for participating in the world championships. With the salaries of footballers it’s nothing
It seemed that a series of five points in a row would add to our windy players in sails, but the Croats started to score and instead of 12:8 our rivals reduced the losses to one point. The Poles managed to get back into their game and build up a few points advantage again. Especially in this phase of the match, Ruzhansky and Stysiak shone, as well as Kornelyuk, who was raging in the block.
The Poles managed to deprive the Croats of all the trump cards from their hands, and Fabrice was especially powerless, having great problems with the completion of the attack. Byalo-Chervona drove with every attack and left no chance for their rivals. The match ended with Witkowska’s serve ace, and the Poles won 3:1.
Now the Poles will return to Gdansk, where they will finish the group stage. At the Ergo Arena, they will face Thailand, South Korea, the Dominican Republic and Turkey on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday respectively.
