Is Poland facing a blackout? The expert has no doubts. “The crisis forces us to save energy”

Must read

- Next week there will be an energy council with the participation of President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, confirms Piotr Czwik, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland.

The government will explain how it secured the Poles

According to him, the president will also ask government representatives about actions to ensure Poland’s energy security.

The Minister of the President informed that the Presidential Council on Ecology, Energy and Natural Resources scheduled for Wednesday, in addition to the Prime Minister, was invited, in particular, by Deputy Prime Minister, MAP head Jacek Sasin, Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskva and Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Adamchik.

As Petr Chvik noted, it is these people - directly or under the leadership of the Prime Minister - who are responsible for the supply of coal and gas to our country. According to the minister, during the meeting, in the presence of Council experts, “questions will be asked about the current situation, because this is a very important topic for the Poles, which is often raised.”

Are we in danger of a power outage?

This is also very important in the context of the announcement of periods of danger in the power market of Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne.

- Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne SA announces risk periods on 09/23/2022 from 19:00 to 20:00, from 20:00 to 21:00 - you can read in the announcement.

Does this mean we are in danger of a blackout?

- Blackout is an extreme measure in the spectrum of threats to the security of energy supply. The solutions used by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne as a warning or then limiting energy consumption are designed to protect against a power outage, understood as a lack or lack of access to energy in a large area of the country, explains Wojciech Jakobik.

He adds that the warning was issued due to the fact that we have reduced power reserve.

- There was no shortage of this power, and no one had a shortage of electricity. The warning is issued so that energy producers who are paid in the capacity market provide this reserve in order to mobilize them to fill the full reserve, which must exceed demand by 9 percent in accordance with Polish rules, Jakobik adds.

The expert predicts that in the worst case, the introduction of power cascades is possible, that is, the limitation of the energy supply to the industry at first.

- Sensitive consumers are protected, as in the gas market, and they should not run out of this energy. Even without the energy crisis, we had temporary problems with energy supply in different places, for example, due to problems in the power grid. The two should not be confused. The energy crisis prompts us to limit the consumption of resources, save energy, also in order to relieve the burden on the national energy system, Wojciech Jakobik emphasizes.

We need new sources of energy

Jakobik points out that the Poles should reduce energy consumption in the near future and also think about purchasing it from new sources.

- This short blanket of our generating capacity of our power plants is getting smaller in relation to demand, but on the other hand, there are ways to cope with it by importing energy, reducing consumption and building new power plants, i.e. nuclear and more renewable energy sources,” the expert lists.

At the same time, he emphasizes that point problems with energy supply arose even before the energy crisis.

- They can now be repeated more often, but this is not a blackout. A backout is a shortage or absence of electricity over a large area of the country for an extended period of time. A phenomenon observed in UDSA or Canada, where entire cities were left without electricity for several tens of hours. Probably, this does not threaten us yet,” sums up Wojciech Jakobik.
