FOMO syndrome is a relatively new phenomenon belonging to a group of lifestyle diseases. It can affect each of us, negatively affecting the quality of life and daily functioning. By definition - FOMO syndrome is defined fear of being out of circulation when Internet access is denied and fear of being deprived of information among other things, from people with whom we interact on social networks.

Who can experience FOMO?

The FOMO syndrome is not only about situations in which we lose access to the Internet or certain social networks due to a failure, but also situations in which we are forced to “get out of life”. Contrary to appearances, FOMO is not only a threat to children and teenagers, but also to adults who use the Internet in their daily work and use the network to connect with family and friends. The FOMO Syndrome is called problematic Internet use - FOMO is a type of addiction, i.e. from using online messengers and social networks.

Not only children and teenagers suffer from FOMO syndrome, especially the younger generation is subject to the constant use of electronic devices in their free time. Killing boredom and the desire to make new friends can quickly turn into a serious problem that interferes with normal functioning.

Causes of FOMO (fear of missing out)

Using the Internet provides a rewarding experience, but unlimited access to information can harm us over time. Through social networks, we make new acquaintances, try to maintain interpersonal relationships and share our lives with others without seeing the associated risks.

The main causes of this syndrome are considered to be the unsatisfied need for belonging to this community and the need for constant connection with the world. Other causes of FOMO syndrome include:

  • lack of acceptance from the environment,

  • the desire to be popular and loved in social networks,

  • problems in contacts with other people outside of virtual reality,

  • unmet need to talk to other people

  • desire to enrich your life.

Symptoms of FOMO (fear of missing out)

The symptoms of FOMO can be easily overlooked. In the case of children, adolescents and adults, the fear of separation is indicated, among other things:

  • constant compulsion to carry the phone and leave it always in sight,

  • constantly check if there are new notifications, for example from social networks,

immediate response to messages and every notification - also in situations requiring the refusal to use the phone, for example, while driving a car, during school hours, during social and professional meetings, at night,

  • frequent use of the phone immediately after waking up,

  • irrational fear of being denied access to information when we are offline,

  • deterioration in mood and a feeling of emptiness when the phone is silent,

  • mood changes due to lack of response to information published and shared on social media and comments from people who follow us,

  • creation of several accounts on various portals - under your own name and under fictitious accounts,

  • the desire to gain popularity and imitation of people observed on the network.

FOMO syndrome is also indicated by long hours spent on the Internet, which leads to the neglect of daily duties.

People with high FOMO experience negative emotions when they are denied access to the Internet. Severe stress, anxiety, irritability, impaired concentration, and loneliness when not using the Internet are also symptoms of FOMO.

How to recognize FOMO (fear of missing out)?

Using the Internet comes with various risks. FOMO is one of them - it not only takes up precious time, but can also lead to somatic symptoms - abdominal pain, dizziness, headache, which is caused by fear of being disconnected from the global Internet and lack of access to information. .

Recognizing FOMO is not easy. Warning signs that should be a concern are often downplayed by adults who take advantage of the “quiet” moment when a child spends time online. If you are experiencing the symptoms of problematic Internet use listed above, you should not put off taking action to change your daily habits.

How to prevent FOMO (fear of missing out)?

It’s easier to prevent than to treat! Prevention of FOMO includes, first of all, limiting the use of the Internet for physical activity and activities that develop individual hobbies and talents. Parents should control how much time their children spend online and set a good example - FOMO often affects entire families, forcing every member of the family to spend time with a phone in hand.

In addition, it is necessary to inform people about the risks associated with constantly being online, social networks, etc., develop interpersonal relationships, offer alternative forms of leisure activities and show children and adolescents that the world around us is more attractive and offers more opportunities. for self-realization than virtual reality.
