Red hands are more than a cosmetic defect. Check what palmar erythema may indicate

Must read

Your hands can say more about your health than you think. Red hands are not always the result of improper care or temperature changes in the immediate environment. It is often a symptom of an illness. And it’s not just eczema or psoriasis. The list of diseases that manifest erythema on the hands is much longer.

Red hands may indicate serious violations in the work of a very important organ - the liver. This organ is involved in the digestion of fats and the production of proteins. It neutralizes various types of toxins and supports the immune system. It is also responsible for thermoregulation. Red skin on the hands is a sign that the liver is crying out for help.

Palmar erythema is a symptom of liver disease.

Erythema visible on the hands often occurs with inflammation and cirrhosis of the liver. It can be seen in about 25-30 percent of patients. It usually appears in the lower part of the arm. The skin in this area is not only red, but also warm. Its formation is usually the result of too much estrogen, which is not absorbed properly by a diseased and damaged liver.

Palmar erythema may also accompany Wilson’s disease. This is a rare but dangerous genetic disease that is manifested by dysfunction of the protein responsible for the transport of copper ions and impaired liver function. As a result, copper accumulates in the body. The disease is difficult to detect. The diagnosis is usually made only when the disease has already caused serious damage to the body. In this case, the treatment is mainly pharmacotherapy. You are taking medicines that reduce the absorption of copper.

Not only palmar erythema or other symptoms of liver damage

Liver failure is accompanied by symptoms such as: loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach problems (flatulence, diarrhea, nausea), abdominal pain, tissue swelling, yellowing of the skin. If you notice any of the above symptoms, contact your doctor immediately. Tell him about your illnesses and ask for a referral to a hepatologist.
