Most often, constipation is not associated with serious diseases, but it is always necessary to diagnose the cause of chronic or recurring problems with stools, because they can be the first symptom, for example, of cancer.

If constipation occurs sporadically, there is no cause for concern. In this case, we will solve the problem with home methods, which include, among other things: change your diet and increase physical activity. Chronic constipation is a more serious problem that requires prompt medical advice. A visit to the doctor should not be postponed when, in addition to constipation, there are other ailments, for example. severe abdominal pain, lower back pain, and bleeding when trying to defecate.

When do we deal with constipation?

The term “constipation” has not yet received an unambiguous definition. Difficulties in defining this concept are associated, among other things, with the subjective sensations of patients. Based on the emerging clinical symptoms, several typical ailments accompanying fecal retention are distinguished.

Most doctors consider stool less than three times a week to be constipated. During constipation, there are problems with defecation, which is due to the abnormal consistency of the stool. Changes in the consistency of the stool can be associated, among other things, with dietary errors that affect the functioning of the digestive tract, disrupting the passage of food through the intestines.

Constipation is classified according to several criteria. One of them is the cause of the disease. In this case, we distinguish primary constipation (functional constipation, idiopathic constipation) i secondary constipation. Primary constipation includes:

  • defecation disorders,

  • constipation with normal bowel movements,

  • constipation with delayed intestinal transit.

Primary constipation accounts for the majority of diagnosed constipation. Most often, they occur against the background of impaired motility of the colon and dysfunction of the structures of the pelvic floor, resulting in problems with the excretion of feces.

Secondary constipation is associated with chronic diseases and disorders in the functioning of the body that affect intestinal motility and digestive processes. Secondary constipation can appear, for example, as one of the symptoms of colon cancer, metabolic disorders, endocrine diseases, mental disorders.

The most commonly diagnosed functional constipation is classified according to Rome IV criteria. They can be diagnosed when at least 2 characteristic symptoms have occurred in the last 3 months, i.e.:

  • attempts to defecate in more than 25% of defecation cases,

  • lumpy or hard stools in more than 25% of bowel movements

  • feeling of incomplete defecation in more than 25% of bowel movements.

Constipation is a serious clinical problem that significantly impairs the quality of life of patients suffering from, for example, diseases that restrict mobility and debilitating diseases of the body. The cause of constipation must be identified before appropriate treatment can be carried out.

Causes of constipation

The most common causes of constipation are primarily dietary errors and lack of exercise. Malnutrition rich in highly processed foods, lack of sufficient liquid in the daily menu, as well as a sedentary lifestyle cause a slowdown in intestinal motility and problems with regular defecation.

Other causes of constipation include::

  • stress and fast paced life

  • hormonal changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period,

  • the use of certain drugs.

Increasingly, psychological factors are the cause of constipation. Problems with bowel movements may be accompanied by, among other things, anxiety disorders and depression.

Since constipation can have various causes, being one of the symptoms of the disease, it is better to consult a doctor before using natural methods to improve intestinal motility.

Are home remedies effective for constipation?

There are many natural remedies for constipation. Home methods to ease bowel movements and regulate the frequency of bowel movements primarily include changing the daily diet, drinking the right amount of water (preferably a glass of water per hour), and physical activity. It is worth remembering that home remedies for constipation are not effective when constipation is associated with chronic conditions.

If you want to use home remedies for constipation, you should include in your daily diet, among other things:

  • fresh fruits - apples, pears, small stones,

  • fresh and boiled vegetables,

  • bean seeds,

  • cottage cheese and other sour-milk drinks,

  • healthy vegetable fats

  • dried fruits (for example, prunes),

  • whole grain oats and whole grain barley flakes,

  • bran, such as wheat bran,

  • whole grain bread, such as whole grain bread,

  • coarse grain,

  • linen,

  • seeds (e.g. pumpkin, sunflower),

  • nuts (especially almonds, walnuts and pecans).

Frequent use also has a positive effect on the functioning of the small and large intestines. sauerkraut and other silage, which is a source of beneficial probiotic bacteria.

Acute constipation is reduced, for example, by glycerin suppositories and herbal teas and dietary supplements that have a laxative effect. Natural substances that help get rid of unpleasant constipation include: in senna leaves. What is important - laxatives should not be abused, as they have the opposite effect of the intended one, making the intestines “lazy” and increasing constipation.

Natural and home remedies for constipation, such as flaxseed, do not work immediately. By increasing the amount of fiber in the diet and introducing foods that improve bowel function into the daily menu, functional constipation caused by dietary errors can be reduced. It is worth remembering that in the treatment of constipation, daily physical activity is also necessary, which improves metabolism, helping to improve the functioning of all organs and systems.
