How to avoid cancer?

The European Cancer Plan has once again developed 12 principles that, according to the latest scientific evidence, are the best way to prevent cancer. It is worth recalling that more than 90% of the incidence of cancer depends on external factors, i.e. the ones we have the most influence on.

European Cancer Control Code - 12 principles

  1. No smoking. Do not use tobacco in any form.

  2. Avoid passive smoking. Make your home a smoke-free place. Support a no-smoking policy in the workplace.

  3. Control your weight - take steps to maintain a healthy weight.

  4. Be physically active. Limit the time you spend sitting.

  5. Eat healthy: eat whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits, limit foods high in sugar or fat, avoid sugary drinks and processed meats, limit red meat and foods high in salt.

  6. Limit your alcohol intake. Avoiding alcohol is the best way to prevent cancer.

  7. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight - pay special attention to the protection of children.

  8. Avoid carcinogens in the workplace.

  9. Protect yourself from radon radiation. Find out if you are exposed to radiation due to naturally high levels of radon in your home and take steps to reduce high levels of radon.

  10. For women: Breastfeeding reduces the risk of cancer in the mother. If you can, breastfeed your baby. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) also increases the risk of developing certain types of cancer - limit it if possible.

  11. Make sure your children participate in hepatitis B (newborn) and human papillomavirus - HPV (girls) vaccination programs.

  12. Participate in cancer screening (tests for colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. Early detection of cancer increases the chances of successful treatment.

Prevention spending is still too low

In 2018 alone, EU countries spent 170 billion euros on cancer treatment. Lung cancer remains the most common cause of death among cancers. After cardiovascular disease, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the EU, accounting for 26% of all deaths. all deaths. Differences between countries in this respect point to significant socioeconomic disparities. It has also been noted that risk factors such as smoking, obesity, harmful use of alcohol and air pollution are more likely to affect men and people with low incomes and low levels of education.

Spending on prevention has increased in the EU in recent years. However, they still account for only 3.4 percent. overall health care costs.
