Home births are becoming more and more popular in Poland. What are its advantages and disadvantages and who can choose it?
Home births in our country are not as popular as abroad, but more and more mothers are considering the possibility of giving birth at home. Such childbirth promotes rapprochement, allows you to build a deeper relationship between partners and the baby, and is also calmer than childbirth in the hospital. However, not every mother can afford to give birth at home. What you need to know about home birth
What is home birth?
A home birth is a birth in which a baby is born in an out-of-hospital setting. A young mother is most often helped by a doula, who advises what positions for childbirth to take, and also monitors the progress of childbirth. This type of delivery excludes the use of pharmacological methods of pain relief, so epidural anesthesia or any other method of pain relief cannot be used. However, you can use aromatherapy or use water immersion.
What are the benefits of home birth?
Home births have many benefits:
-
allows you to experience childbirth the way a woman wants
-
allows you to experience childbirth more deeply
-
allows you to establish a closer relationship between partners and the child
What are the disadvantages of home birth?
However, home birth is not for everyone. The disadvantages include:
-
lack of medical care for perinatal complications
-
inability to use pharmacological methods of pain relief
Who can benefit from home birth?
Home birth is not for everyone. Only pregnant women with normal pregnancies can use this birth method. If the baby is positioned correctly (i.e. head down) and there were no abnormalities during pregnancy, home birth is possible. The slightest complications, incorrect position of the fetus or even high blood pressure are contraindications for home birth.
This type of delivery is also not recommended for women who have previously given birth by caesarean section. Natural childbirth after a caesarean section is more difficult (although not impossible) and must be supervised by a doctor in a hospital setting. It is worth remembering that in such a situation, if something starts to get complicated, you can quickly do a caesarean section. During home births, you have to call an ambulance and deliver the woman in labor to the hospital, which means the loss of precious time.
