It takes time after drinking alcohol because the liver gets rid of alcohol from the blood. He does this at his own pace, removing an average of 0.15 ppm of alcohol per hour. Techniques such as sleeping, strong coffee, drinking plenty of water, a cool bath, running can stimulate but will not have much effect on liver function. It is also worth remembering that eating fatty foods slows down the absorption of alcohol into the blood, but does not eliminate it. Moreover, the later alcohol enters the liver, the later it will begin to metabolize it. This will prolong the healing process.
Myths about ridding the body of alcohol
“Unfortunately, drunkenness on the roads is still supported by many misconceptions about sobriety. Too little is known about the effects of psychoactive substances on driving ability, Katarzyna Lukowska, director of PARPA, told a press conference.
Some people think, for example, that it is enough to take a nap, go for a run, eat fatty foods with alcohol, or take a cold shower to sober up faster. PARPA reminds that the main organ that removes alcohol from the body is the liver and such activities do not have a great impact on its work. On average, the liver gets rid of alcohol at a rate of about 0.15 ppm per hour.
How much we will have ppm in the blood depends on how much we weigh and individual characteristics. Therefore, a person weighing 70 kg will have an average of 0.2 ppm of alcohol in the blood after drinking a beer, but it may happen that in an individual case this value will be higher or lower.
The highest concentration of alcohol in the blood is reached after about 0.5 – 1 hour for a person who drinks on the so-called fasting stomach and about 1.5 – 3 hours for a person who takes food before and during drinking. It should also be remembered that whether we eat before and during drinking does not affect the maximum values of blood alcohol concentration – they depend only on the amount of pure alcohol drunk. Eating before and while drinking only increases the time it takes for alcohol to be absorbed.
Another myth is the belief that after some kind of alcohol (for example, after vodka) you will sober up faster. Vodka, beer, and wine contain ethanol, and this compound is the psychoactive substance that causes intoxication and from which the liver cleanses our body.
Scientists: Coffee does not help sober up
There are many myths about speeding up sobering up and curing hangovers. One of them is the belief that coffee helps you sober up. Professor Tony Moss of London’s South Bank University debunked this popular myth in the UK Food Unwrapped programme. The scientist referred to his study, which was attended by five students. They were invited to a pub and served alcoholic drinks according to their weight and height. When they were a little tipsy, the researchers asked them to take a simple test to check their hand-eye coordination. They needed to pass a metal circle through the wire, but not touch it. Of course, none of them succeeded.
The students were then given coffee to drink and asked to complete the task again. Although each of them seemed more focused, none of them passed the test. In addition, Professor Moss used a breathalyzer to check the level of alcohol in the exhaled air. It did not decrease after drinking coffee.
A very similar study was done a few years ago in mice, and the results were the same.
So it’s better not to overestimate your abilities, even if after coffee you feel better. This drink has no magical properties and will not reduce the amount of alcohol in the blood.
What to do to sober up faster and fight a hangover?
In fact, how quickly we sober up depends on several factors, such as body weight, height, type of alcohol, food intake, health status, medications taken, frequency of drinking. What we do before bed is also important. Drinking a few glasses of water will surely make it easier for you to get out of bed in the morning.
The best method for dealing with a hangover is based on three elements: you must hydrate your body intensely with water, eat nutritious and healthy foods, and make sure you get enough sleep.
However, it is better to give up coffee, energy drinks and the popular “pitch”.
How to sober up in 5 minutes?
If you want to sober up quickly, you can use proven methods:
-
take glucose
-
drink water
-
drink pickled water
-
eat something
Remember, however, that they will not force you to eliminate all the alcohol you drink from your body in a few minutes!
1. Take glucose
If we want to sober up quickly, we must speed up the work of the liver. How to do it? It is worth trying to take glucose. Alcohol consumption renders the liver unable to synthesize sugars properly. If we want to improve the absorption of alcohol and at the same time sober up quickly, we can use a glucose solution after drinking alcohol. We will buy it at the pharmacy. It is enough to dissolve a little glucose in water and drink it, and sobriety will accelerate.
2. Drink water
Hydration of the body plays a key role in faster sobriety. Drinking water is recommended not only after drinking alcohol, but also during it. Thanks to this, the consequences of drunkenness are less unpleasant. A large amount of mineral water will make up for the lack of water caused by alcohol (which flushes it out of the body along with elements and minerals), and this will improve well-being.
3. Drink pickled water
Water from pickled vegetables contains a large amount of vitamin C, and this causes an energy boost. In addition, it is a source of potassium, iron, magnesium, vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin E. The big advantage of silage is that it supports fat metabolism, so if you eat fatty foods while drinking, it is worth the silage water later. , to speed up digestion and improve the functioning of the digestive system.
4. Eat something hot – preferably an omelette or soup
After drinking alcohol, it is worth eating warm food to warm up the body and speed up the digestive processes. It is worth eating eggs rich in cysteine, which accelerates the detoxification of the body. In addition, warm and nutritious soups or salmon dishes are suitable.
