A team from the University of Gdansk with experts from China has developed a new approach to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria. The achievement was described in the prestigious scientific journal “Chemical Engineering Journal”.

The press service of the University of Gdansk reports on the study on the university website. According to scientists from the University of Gdansk, 4.5 million hospital-acquired infections are registered annually in Europe. Broad-spectrum drug-resistant bacteria, for which it is difficult to find an effective antibiotic, are a growing threat.

There was no cure for these bacteria.

Special mention should be made here of bacteria of the “ESCAPE” type, which elude both drugs and the body’s defenses. Therefore, numerous teams around the world are looking for new methods to combat such microbes.

Specialists from the Interuniversity Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdansk and MUG, together with experts from the Chinese University of Tianjin, described an approach based on the photodynamic method. It consists in the introduction of a special compound that sensitizes bacteria to the action of the corresponding light, with the help of which dangerous microbes are subsequently destroyed.

The Polish team was involved in the development of the study concept, validation of the effectiveness of the method, analysis of the results and preparation of the publication. The work on the Polish side was headed by Dr. hab. Mariusz Gringolts, prof. UG. The publication was published in the prestigious periodical “Chemical Engineering Journal”.
